Off Roading ? on purchase of 04.5 4x4

I am wondering if i should get a wheel / slick combo for my 4x4 truck. I have heard MADDOG runs slicks on his and he gets good traction. Id like to have this set-up just for at the track. What wheel/ slicks would you guys recomend? I Have 4. 10 gears (what tires size will be best)

Thanks

Nick

You're not going to be losing traction in 4x4 even up to 500 RWHP. If anything you need to upgrade your transmission with billet throughout and put a lockup switch in so that after the 1-2 shift you lock it and then hold on!

The best example of this, at least to me, is Rhondasway who is running sub 13's (12. 8's I think?) with just a little over 450 at the rears. Most don't make it into the 12's until they have 500 back there... but then again, I think she is self-proclaimed insane, so that helps!

Thanks guys. Pretty awesome that i dont have to spend the money on a wheel/tire combo now :). . More money for engine bombs :)

not so fast...

Thanks Josh (and it's 12. 6's, blush)... But I do have traction loss problems quite frequently, which show in varied 60' times. If I launch at 20lbs or more (sometimes less on a slick track), I spin 'em. If you know that, you can work around it, but it is a fine line. Burnoffs help a bit.

Last year I ran Pirelli (sp? ) Scorpions, tire pressure lowered to 25lbs, I think. There are probably stickier tires out there...

You are going to have to find slicks for a 17" wheel and I don't think they are many, if any, out there that will fit. If there is, they are probably meant for ricers and Camaros/Mustangs. You'll need more sidewall.

I have Toyo Proxes ST's and they are plenty sticky. As Rhonda stated, dialing the pressures in helps in the track variances. Dennis Perry (TS Performance) ran 11. 54 with these tires in 4wd, I wonder if they slipped on him.

Richard ran slicks at one time, and I don't think he does now.

I can launch at 20PSI on my slicks in 2wd and they jump and bark just a sec, and then bite,, but I haven't got a full 60' in yet. .

You should be able to launch WAYY up on the boost gauge,, and once you run slicks,, traction isn't something you worry about. It's U-joints, yokes, and transmission shafts.

You are going to stress the drivetrain,, big time.

You'll need to Billet Proof it.

I'm running 4-wheel slicks, but, since nobody has really done it before, I'm running into new problems,,,, and some, self induced problems :(

THis coming Sunday,, you should see some new times from my 12V.
