OK I give up. I've seen the other thread on draining the water out of the fuel filter but you should not need to loosen, remove or whatever, to simply drain off some fuel to check for water in the fuel filter. Sure, the owner's manual says lift the valve and lower the valve, and... . isn't something supposed to happen!! As a number of you have said "nothing comes out when you lift the valve lever. " Well, same here. So what gives? There must be some method of performing this task without tools, gloves, taking a bath in fuel or spilling fuel down the side of the Cummins or front suspension? #ad

Tag, Not sure if this will work or not for I haven't done it yet. My thought is next time I remove the filter I'd like to install a quick drain (like the small airplanes have)so I can "waste" a little fuel via way of a tube to the ground. You can always catch the fuel in a glass to see if water is present as well. Just a thought, but worth the effort if it can be done in my opinion.

P. S. Buy your fuel from a station that sells a lot of diesel to avoid problems with water and keep the tank full if don't use your truck much. Water formulates fast in containers which are only half full. Or is that half empty...

If I simply lift the lever up, I get no flow. If I lift it up then close it a little and then back up it starts to flow.
Try it.

Big-D and Mac thanks for the suggestions. I'll try Mac's first and see how that works.

If Mac's idea does not work, just loosen the fuel filter lid to break the seal. It should then flow.

Tagalong,
I agree, you should not have to use tools or disassemble your truck to drain water from the fuel. Mine also will not pump the first time I lift the lever. I usually work the lever about 4-5 times before I get a really good flow.
Hope it works for you.

Merry Christmas to all.

I do the same as Mac and it works if I open the valve and close it and then reopen it again and it works every time or atleast on my truck.

Dont loosen the lid,the reason it wont come out is because it is not vented. There is a shraeder valve on the fuel line right behind the filter, with the drain open just insert fingernail in shraeder and it will drain all you want.

Terry, with your method doesn't air get drawn into the system that needs to be bleed or else the engine runs poorly for a while? On my 12 valves if nothing comes out I just push the manual pump button on the lift pump a few times.

Just my two cents worth. I had the dealer show me what to do to get the fuel to flow and you guys are right. You have to work the lever up and down a few times to get a good flow of fuel. The dealer says this is a normal function.

You can do one of two things... .
open and close the lever to sort of start pumping out the fuel. This should cause a stream of fuel to flow. -OR-
Open the drain lever, then remove the black cap on the pressure test port where the fuel line goes into the injector pump and push open the shrader-valve with your fingernail. This will also cause a stream to flow.

I have found both ways to work for me.
