Heavy hauling????

I am planning to drive to puerto vallarta in november. I've never driven in mexico and would appreciate any thoughts and advice from anyone who has. I'll be traveling in a 2001 3500 6-speed, stock with bd e-brake, lance 1121, with wife and two golden retrievers. Thanks, ken k. e-mail -- email address removed --

I think the insurance would be my biggest concern. I have been told your insurance is null and void down there, I know at the border I have seen insurance for sale to go across the border. I have no idea the price. I always leave the truck here and walk across. I just go to the border towns so to speak. I always make sure I am back across before dark also. I know it can be done. Some of my friends even take rifles across to go hunting.

Reference taking guns into Mexico, don't even think about taking gun or ammo across border. Either will get you a visit to the local jail if discovered.

I would also read into what is required for your dogs, They might let them into mexico, then give you a hard time bringing them back across.

dogs - mexico - insurance

all you need to re-enter the US is current shots and the records to prove it. we take my wife's puddles every trip which is about twice a year.

I buy car & TT insurance on the US side of the border and the cost is directly related to what you want. Liability is mandatory and having none will get you the same result as taking guns OR ammo into Mexico.

another thought is that you can get your cell phone re-prog'd so that you can use it "down there" also. lots of "retired" yanks enjoying the cheaper living, relaxed atmosphere and cerveza...

I live close in Texas to the border and have worked and driven in Mexico quite a bit. Basically you lose all your rights when you cross the border.

DO NOT think that things are the same as the USA and that people will drive and act like the USA does.

You need insurance that can be bought at the border.

You need to have your clear title to the vehicle with you. . If you do not have clear title, then get a letter from the lien holder giving you permission to take it to Mexico.

You will have to get a turista permit at the border, you can go 50 miles without one.

You do not need a passport, just photo ID.

Be sure you can read and understand the road signs.

They have a system and do not appreciate tourists who do not follow it. For instance, he who blows his horn first has the right-of-way. Do not honk twice... it is an insult and can result in confrontation.

Do not take any electronics across without declaring them at the border.

Carry "mordida" with you. That is money to buy your way through. Make sure to not keep all of your money together so that you can pull out a little at a time. Fines are often assessed and paid on the spot.

No guns or ammo. 1 cartridge can get you arrested. Been there.

Keep your tank full 'cause sometimes it is a long way in between open stations.

That's all I can think of at the moment... hope it helps.

PS. Don't be discouraged, I have driven lots of miles and distances South of the Border with relatively little trouble.

Enjoy,

Karen

I was in El Paso last summer and inquired about crossing the border into Juarez (sp?). I got the feeling that if you have an automotive accident across the border, you are responsible, PERIOD. Needless to say, I walked across the bridge. There are alot of "panhandlers" that want to sell you something or show you a pretty girl, I just ignore them. Do your homework and you should be okay.

Ken,

Sounds like a dream trip to me :)

I've been traveling around Baja for many years. The small town people are very friendly and will go far out of their way to help and show kindness. Be friendly and you will get it back 10 fold.

That said, remember there are always bad seeds in any group of people regardless of race, religion or political beliefs, so keep a smile on your face and one finger on the trigger ;) (just an expression, don't even think of bringing a gun)

Karen's advice was right on except for the $ for mordida imo. If you get stopped always ask to see the judge. Usually this will result in you being excused on the spot with an accompanying excuse. It will never cost you more to see the judge.

I'd add this-

Never keep all your cash on you ($100 max) and don't bring a big cash wad. Have a $200 cash reserve stashed some where. I use my dirty laundry bag ;) Use travelers checks and cash them in at banks in the citys. Bring a credit card and check all transactions with a calculator for USD-Peso correctness. I like to cash $100 US to Pesos and keep it as my WAM money so I don't have to use the calculator. This is especially helpful the further away from big cities you are. Bring a pocket calculator, it will be very helpful at times.

When you stop, don't leave the truck unattended unless you see a security guard, or a local offers to watch it. Make sure the local is someone who is working nearby or has a business, not just milling around. ALWAYS pay folks who help you, you must understand the local customs and paying for services rendered is a universal custom.

DO NOT drive at night, ever. The big bulls move around at night. Your family's lives are not worth risking. Trust me, you will not be able to stop in time, most often they will dart out from a bush only feet ahead of you. DO NOT drive the highway Sunday evenings. Drunk drivers are not exclusive to the USA.

Learn some Spanish. It will be very helpful. There are many good audio tapes you can buy and listen to in your truck before you go and while on the trip. The locals appreciate it immensely when you try and learn "their" language. Just like we expect people in our country to use English, they will too if they don't speak English. That said, some of the best conversations and friendly interactions have been with locals who speak no English, but go way out of their way to help me. Bring a Spanish to Englisher dictionary, it will be invaluable. Always say thank you when someone helps or shows kindness.

Bring extra fuel filters and a basic tool box. The diesel in Mexico is better than what we have, you'll notice the extra power and fuel mileage. I always have two 5 gallon cans of diesel on board when traveling long stretches between big cities. Go to Cummins website and find the Cummins facilities in Mexico. Very unlikely you'll need them, but they could prove valuable in a pinch. MAKE SURE before you go your batteries, belts and hoses are not old. Do all PMs by the book before you go. Keep the old belts and hoses as a backup. The mechanics in Mexico are incredibly talented at patching stuff together, so besides engine or transmission work, their is not much that could go wrong that they could not fix. Check out the "Dina" diesel busses and trucks, they are legendary for their power :D

Most of all have fun! I wish I was going :) A few days into the trip you'll be "in the groove" and having a blast. Watch out for the Tequila, some of it is soooo smooth you'll be in over your head before you know it :D

Mexico insurance

Read the fine print. I hit a bull and the deductible was $1000. 00. I bought (Grupo provensial nasional) from "AAA". Yes I will go again. All of the Authorities were vary polite, especially the soldiers. They use check point to check for guns drug runners etc.

If you are member of the AAA you can get your insurance befor you go. It saves time at the border. Again no guns or ammo, 1 bullet can get you a year in the pokey. As for the dogs all you will need is proof of their vacinations. I have had nothing but good trips to Mexico over the last 30 years.

Baja California is an extension of southern California. NO passport, tourist visa, temporary vehicle permit, or Pesos required. Mexican auto insurance manatory. Not the real Mexico.

I'd still go. ;)

Hmmm... Must have been a while since you were there. Try getting past the check point in Guererro Negro without a tourist card. Better be good at converting dollars to pesos at the gas station in El Rosario or you'll end up short ;) Not the real Mexico? Where you been in Baja? Just the Bars?

I spend 4 months in Baja every winter and the best place I have found for insurance is Lewis & Lewis in Beverly Hills Ca. They have a web page ,but sorry I don't have the address handy
