Heating time and temps

Fuel Filter Article

I keep plugging my fuel filters. the filters dont look bad when I replace them but I cant keep pressure. I'm running about 50% DSE blended fuel. The WVO is getting heated to 180deg for several hours to remove water and pushed through a 1 micron filter bag. I have the most problems with the truck in the morning so I'm thinking I might need to thin the oil more. I'm mixing

1ozDSE

2oz PS Diesel Kleen

2oz PS White Bottle( cant remember what its called)

1/3gal RUG

1/2oz PS Bio Kleen

thats per 5 Gal Dewatered and Filtered WVO

Anybody have any other suggestions?

filter plugging

ok

heres whats going on

your heating the oil thats great

then you start filtering the oil with a one micron filter and you pass it thru how many times???

then the gasoline is not the right amount 1/3 per 5 = 2. 5 gallons per 40 gallons of oil .

the dse mix for summer right out of the book is 5% but they also want kerosene at 10% so theres 4 gallons you dont have.

the better blend the one I have used for 8 months is

40 gallons of filtered dewatered oil

4 gallons of RUG( 6 gallons winter)

32 oz of powerservice (this has been changed to tdr-s 14 oz)

6 oz of mock dse (same as dse its just my blend)

8 oz of cetane boost (the good stuff)

You just need to understand how the filters work this will get you over the ruff spot and then its on to higher amounts of blend.

email me or call and I will give you the info on how the filters work.

you are really close to getting it right

CJ whats your number? I dont know when I'm getting outta work tonight but if its not too I'll give you a call. I heat and filter the oil in 30 gal batches anywhere from 12-24 hours depending on if theres steam coming out at the 12 hr mark.

strehl what does your oil look like before you begin to process it? When heating mine I always go for 200F.

It depends. Sometimes its quite milky so I "cook" it longer. This stuff that I'm using now comes out quite dark when I'm done heating and filtering. I tlked to CJ on friday night and I think I'm going to change my procedure a little bit.

Yes the thick stuff comes out darker for me too. The heavier stuff I use a higher percentage of additives (DSE chemical, diesel fuel additive and gasoline). Also it seems if I mix a couple quarts of diesel per 5 gallons of thick oil and let it cook longer and stir it good that helps too, then mix the ingredients in toward the end and stir/agitate some more (except for gas, don't add that until fuel has cooled considerably).

I think my temp gauge on the system took a crap. its only reading about 155 right now and I cant touch the pipes for more than a split second. Its steaming up a storm tho. The whole shop is getting a haze in it and it smells a little ripe. lol that put and end to my boss letting me keep it at work. the water heater elements that im using dont last long, as CJ had mentioned to me, I think im going to try a lower watt density heater to see what happens. so far the trucks running good with the new filter and this batch should be done by the time I get done with work so i can fill up again. This last tank of 50% mix got me 550 miles since last wed so my milage is going up.

I went through 4 fuel filters in my truck in 2hrs. My process is now heat and filter for 6hrs (there was very minimal water in this batch) let it cool then filter for another 6hrs. This is all through a 1 micron filter bag. My filters in the truck look like they have a dark film coating the paper after they plug. I wish I would have taken pictures but I was getting a little frustrated. Could I really have that much crap in my tank that the blend along with the power service bio-kleen is getting it suspended and its plugging my filters THAT quick? The other two trucks are still running fine.

I noticed that if I leave my filters sit in my blended fuel the sludge falls off the filter. I think I'm going to try cracking my fuel drain for a sec or 2 every time I start the truck to try letting the sludge drain out of the bowl before it goes right back into the filter.

Am I still doing something wrong or am I just unlucky and have a bunch of tiny bugs living in my tank?

fuel filters

Hello

the next time you change a filter take a picture of it and post it or send it to me you have my email.

Also take a sample of the fuel from the filter about a pint or so set it on the work bench and dont move it see what settles out of it are you filtering with your bosses filter or some thing different?

You might be better off to heat the oil then only use the top oil and not use or filter the bottom oil in the heating tank if you use the heating and filtering tank to do both you might need to filter it way longer than what you are doing.

the other trucks what are they.

I would think that your tank would be clean by now but you might want to take it down and see if you have something wrong in there.

good luck, email me if you need anything

Since I plugged other one yesterday I can take a picture of it when I decide to mess with it. I'm a little sick of messing with it and spending so much on filters when I should be getting my box of 12 in a couple days so the truck is parked right now.

On sat i flushed my tank using a goldenrod 10 micron filter. I pulgged two of those and the third lasted the rest of the day. I was using my fass 95 to flush the tank. I let it circulate for 12 hours then pumped the whole tank out into clean 5gal containers. hooked everything back up put the fuel back in the tank. I actually got about 80-100 miles out of a new fuel filter on sunday.

The other 2 trucks are a 97 12v with 240K and a 97 7. 3 powerstroke with 150K. Both of those trucks plugged a filter this weekend.

I'm still using the bosses canister with my 1 micron bags. I did finally find another canister but i have to modify it a little bit to make it work.

hello

could the oil be hydrogenated that stuff will mess with filters big time all it takes is a small change in temp to plug filters.

are you plugging the water sep on the fass or the fuel filter?

I dont have teh fass with the filter and water separater all it is is the pump. Is there any way to make the fass push a little higher pressure?

There could be some hydrated oil in this. I don't know what places this oil came from or how old it is. Its from a brother of a co-worker who use to run it straight in his powerstroke.

When the other trucks are started they act like your trying to start them in too cold of temps with the intake heater/glow plugs not working. I'm a little nervous about those trucks tonight as the temps are suppose to get down into the 20's tonight. Mine has started a little slower than normal when the temps got in the upper 30's to low 40's but its parked in the driveway now and I'm driving my $200 ranger that still has gas from last fall in:-laf

The stuff coating the filter literally looks like diarrea.

This Is a new one that the powerstroke plugged today. This one is 5 days old roughly 75-80 miles on it. Still dont have my box of filters so mines still parked.

These pics are taken with my cell phone. hopefully i can take some of mine when I pull it with my camera.

lok at these

hello

look at page 22 post 329 in the dse in truck posting

is this the same looking stuff its the water filter ?

this pic was taken after a cold snap the only thing is its all in the water filter its not in the fuel filter see the pic of the red filter

these are off my truck

Check to see if you have allergy in your tank or you cooker. I got a allergy in my extra tank gave me fits till i found out what it was. My filter was verry black like your filter. -------BEN

Are you pushing it through that 1 micron filter when it's hot? Try cold filtering the oil. If it's hydrogenated oil, you can run it through a filter when it's warm no problem, but then once it cools back to down to outside temperature, it'll plug up your fuel filter in a hurry.

300 gallons + ?????

I need 300+ gal per week supply of this stuff, how much time are we talking about... ... . dse website says you can make 55 gal in 15 minutes, but you guys keep talking about heating for several hours to get the water out?????

i dont have all day to sit around and "cook" this stuff??????
