hello mark and others

yes i do plan on a scope

a few years ago i got a lighted colin scope with a video port on it we use it to look down the intakes of gas engines looking for nuts and bolts before starting them, its about 3/8 of an inch wide so it fits real good in small places cant get it past the valves but thats what the spark plugs for on a gasser.

it going to be used as soon as i get the injector pulled.

sled dog the tires are 35. 1 inches tall and no i dont tow heavy truck and camper only 12,000 lbs +

the 05 has stock tires 265/70-17 i think will check later

cj,

Wow... most of the time, I'd love that 75mph/1800rpm!

Right now, I've got 4. 10 pumpkins so I see 2000 RPM at 60. Of course, when I hook up the trailer, this gearing isn't too bad...

... I got my new tires 285/70-19. 5 on it so my mileage is a little differnt not sure how to drive the truck I can run 75 mph at 1800 rpm and get about 14. 4 mpg or run 80 mph at 1950 rpm and get 13. 9 mpg this is with #2 only the blend fuel was used up on the way down and I was trying to get used to the way the truck drives with the new size wheels and tires. think it will take some time getting used to this but so far I like the way it drives. before 80 mph was 2200 rpm's. cj hall

tires and fuel

hello all

sled dog

with 19. 5's you have some good sizes to choose from

225 - 245 - 265 - 285 - 315 the last size only made by one co.

if I remember right the 245 is close to the stock size 265 is 33 inches tall

the 285 are 35 inches and the 315 are close to 38 inches tall yes there are pricey the 285 i bought cost 337. 00 each but the people I have talked to about them think they should last over 100,000 miles if treated right.

the truck is going in for a oil change on thursday and then in to have the injector pulled next tuesday they will test fire the injector to see what kind of spray pattern it has and also let me take a look in the injector hole with my scope also they said they can dyno it for me so I can tell if its making good power last year they didnt really want to do much for me but I think because it running good with veg oil and the price of number 2 is still so high their a little more happy to see if this is working yes I plan to post all this info on this website good or bad.

thanks for reading

oil test

Hello alll

Went to the CATERPILLER EQUIPMENT today for a Engine Oil Test the cost was 17. 50 for the sample bottle and the test it self you fill the bottle then send it off to a place in Washington State called S. O. S. thay run some tests on in and then report back to Cat then you have to go out and get the report not sure how long it will take but I am planing on changing the oil on Thursday the 13.

also I have a service call for the injector to be pulled on the 19 of July they will pull the injector and test fire it. I will try to get pictures to post on this site and will be looking at the cylinder of the engine with a scope.

injector pull

Hello All

Yes its done and the engine is fine what we have is some coking of the injectors we pulled #1 and#2 we found that the tops of the pistons are clean as in no build up and there is a good burn pattern on the piston the coking is around the part of the injector that is in the hole in the head not to much on the tip. we looked at injectors from another diesel that only has run #2 fuel the coking of that injector is a little harder to get off the stem than with the ones that I have the carbon junk is like the candy coating on a m&m hard but flakes of easy.

The person that took it apart had no clue what fuel I am running he has pulled injectors on over 600 engines he was not scared of what he saw thought I should run some seafoam in my fuel to help clean it up. Others in the shop thought water/alky injection might clean things also, the owner of the shop thinks a Timing Change/Fuel Rail Presure change might be the best thing for it. I did get some pictures of the injectors and will post them as soon as I can. We did not spray test the injectors to look at the pattern we could have but the chance of hurting the injector is to great.

also we could not see the cylinder walls the scope we had just fit in the hole and would not bend once it was installed

I did get the report back from s. o. s. on the engine oil nothing to report there

(wear metals and other test results appear to be normal)

(suggest resample next normal interval)

(no action required)

and the last thing is the dse additive nothing back from the lab yet will be posting as soon as i get the info on that

I will make some changes to the fuel blend and have this checked in a few months , the cost to do this is very small I was charged 93. 00 dollars for the pulling of the injectors will worth the money 17. 50 for the oil test also worth the money.

mileage

Hello

Mileage on the truck is 43 700 miles, using the blend fuel for the last 10,000 to 11,000 miles but a lighter blend in the winter around 25/75 winter to 100/0 in the summer

Have been using 100% blend for the last 3 months but did run two tanks of #2 on the forth of july in south dakota.

cj,

That's great news - pretty much all around. From what I've read, the piston shape is probably helping us (the 'cup' in the center) - and preventing any altered spray pattern or unburned fuel from easily reaching the piston rings/cylinder wall and causing problems.

The oil analysis seems to confirm this, since there were no abnormalities there and I would expect some if enough fuel were finding its way to the rings to cause trouble. Bummer not seeing the cylinder walls, but given the other things you can see it sounds like it's all operating reasonably well.

Re: I will make some changes to the fuel blend and have this checked in a few months...

What did you have in mind?

BTW - I'm running 50/50 just now, and it seems to be working very well.

fuel changes

hello mark

the change will be injector cleaner it i can find some thing that will work better than the powerservice stuff or just more powerservice

About a week ago, I filled up with 50% WVO blend and it ran great. Did some towing late last week (also ran great). When we got home, it was down just over 1/2 (est 25 gal) so I topped off with more WVO blend (perhaps 80% now?).

Runs great but a little shakey starting, even in this hot weather.

You notice anything like that on your 04. 5/05 cj?

FYI - Mark

starting

Hello Mark and all others

Yes its a little hard to start after you go above 75% ,the quick fix is to plug it in at night also put it on a timer about 1 hr before you need it start(so its not running all night) warming it up it really only takes 15 min or so to get it started , or it will start after some cranking on it I have never not had it start its just easer to plug it in. this could be where you start hurting the injectors if you start it cold , just a thought also I never start it and take a short trip if started I drive it tell it up to running temp,if so then I will shut it down if not it runs tell its hot.

I never said anything about this, wanted to see if someone else had the samething happen to there truck also.

hope this is usefull info for everyone out there

I did get some pictures of my waste oil pump I will post them later tonight and a pic of my truck with the big wheels and tires.

Thanks for looking

cj,

Thanks for confirming this. . I put 2 more gallons of #1 in last nite, and it started a bit better this AM. Parked it at 9:30AM, took off for errands at 12:30PM (started like it was on #2). Back at 1:30, off at 3:30 (still perfect)... so, I think it's right on the edge with about 15% kerosene when the overall percentage of WVO is 75-80% (or more).

I live in the sticks, so even running to town get's it up to temp (thankful there).

Guess I'll be picking up a heater cord at the local Cummins dealer for this Fall.

Meanwhile, I'll also be looking for still better ways to dilute that doesn't trash the cetane rating...

Thx,

Mark
