trailer batteries

hi fellas... got to talking to a D-MAX owner on amateur radio the other nite... . GEEZ... . this guys is claiming he tows his Jayco 30ft (10,000 loaded) at 80mph and got 14. 5 mpg..... :--) i say "Riiiigggghhhhttttt"... i tow a 27ft HR 5er at 70-75 most times and my best is 11. 8 ,while my low has been 8. 9... all calculated by hand. ... now, admittedly he doesn't have NEAR the wind resistance as my high-profile 5'er,and,he does have a hi-back camper shell on when towing..... i must say i am slightly less than convinced those numbers are anywhere close to accurate!!!

towing at those speeds,it should be tough to get anywhere close to 14mpg IMHO... ... any thoughts???... he also complained about "the lousy fuel in the US,has to change fuel filter religously ... im gonna get more info, such as 2-4wd, axle ratio etc.

i do know he has the Allison transmission. .

anyway,just had to tell somebody... ... later... . tom:cool:

C'mon - why get upset - we already KNOW the GM and Ford guys have poor judgement when they BOUGHT that stuff - why should we be surprised that they cant COUNT, either? :D

Duramax

I'll bet he has driven that fast while towing, and has gotten that mileage. Just not at the same time!

..... yea, kinda "frosted my butt" when he said i bought the wrong diesel for good fuel mileage..... lol... . coulda choked him!!!... . tom;)

I would have to say he is full of it. I just got rid of a Dmax that pulling 8K worth of car hauler and rock buggy, I could get 14mpg doing no faster than 75mph. As speed went up a little, milage went down a lot beyond that. It had 3. 73 and a 6-speed. I do have to say though, the new Dodge does not get anywhere near the mileage my Dmax did.

The only time I got less than 16 MPG while towing my 25' Airstream was in South Dakota when I went a half day into a 40 MPH headwind. No, I don't want an electronic powerful truck. :D

Anyone pulling any kind of trailer at 75 MPH + has no sense and is a menace/risk to everyone on the road around him. I would not be surprised to see that idiot trying to go 75 MPH in the snow with his 10K rig.

I wonder if he got confused, and meant kmpg, not mpg. That would be a little more in line.

I liked the comment that the mileage was suppose to be at the same time you were towing, not empty. Maybe he was using an overhead computer. I SUDDENLY get more mileage when I turn the box on. I think the box is based on the TPS which is less with the box on and therefore it "thinks" less throttle to go the same speed.

Or maybe his computer was in metric units.

Those folks are out there in every truck. I was told again and again by CTD folks throughout the years they got 24 mpg or better and not much off that towing. It's all crap. I average 16-18 combo driving, 10-11. 5 towing.

I also always tow in the sweet spot (around 2k). That's running on interstates. We travel anywhere from 100 to 300 miles one way at least once a month to camp. I can't see traveling that distance on good mostly straight interstates out west locked out of OD taching out to run 60ish MPH. We'd never get anywhere because of the distances and also with the exception of Cali the speed limits are mostly 70-75 mph so it's not like we're running over people (quite the opposite). Of course, if the conditions warrant slower running we gladly back it off.

All I'm getting at is that people who tow 70-75 are not maniacs risking everyone with death and dismemberment.

You guys have severely under estimated that DMAX owner's results.

What he meant was, he got 7. 5 mpg going and 7 mpg coming back home at 80-85. Now the way my uncle always figured things, that meant he got 14-14. 5 mpg. And he would stick to it to his dying day.

You guys are all way out in left field. I have it on good authority that the Duramax gets such good mileage that a guy can head down the road for refueling with a 1/4 tank of diesel and have 3/4 of a tank when he arrives.

Ramtough,

What's with the speed thing ? I think anyone towing (or not) that is breaking the flow of traffic by going slower than everyone else is the hazard.

I personally tow my 26' boat (7000#) usually whatever the speed limit is or 5 (70-75)over and don't feel like a menace or risk to anyone.

Tell me what speed should us people towing go ?

The speed you go is the speed you can get it all stopped before crashing into the next vehicle? Which means NYC 5 mph, North Dakota put it on the floor and leave it there.

i travel coast-coast annually, and have no problem travelling at 70-75 with my 5'er..... admittedly, one has to be aware at all times travelling at those speeds, towing or solo... . beyond that... 'nuff said... ... ... . tom;)
