Bob,

I know this sounds dumb, but what is the true drag test. Can some one explain to me what should happen and why.

Thanks, TJ

Tj, ATS claims that there is no clutch drag in their system.

By doing the test, it will show if ATS really has no clutch drag.

no clutch drag = no wheel spin in neutral

simple but effective test :)

Thanks Bob,

To save me from jacking up my truck does the stock trans spin when lifted and in Neutral.

I'm no expert here, but as long as the rear brakes aren't dragging excessively, most torqueflites i've had experience with, both with and without lockup clutches, would turn the rear wheels when the engine is running and the vehicle is jacked up in neutral. IMHO, nothing is proven by doing this.

BTW, the rear wheels turn in a forward-moving direction.

TommyTurbosaurus, what this proves is that there is clutch drag. In other words, if you are truly in neutral, how are the rear wheels turning?

If you pulled the clutches out of the transmission and did the same test, the rear wheels wouldn't move.

Clutch Drag equals parts wearing out correct. How does the DTT Trans react in this test.

I'm trying to learn as much as posible about the auto trans sense I now own one.

As I've stated before this is my first auto and it is a pain in the rear and higher maintaince than my New Orleans sweet heart.

Thanks,TJ

TJ, my truck spent its first 50,000 miles hotshotting 5th-wheel trailers back and forth across the rockies. There is no record of transmission work done under warranty during this time. It survived. Thousands of CTD owners have never heard of the TDR and have never experienced transmission problems. While there is always room for improvement, behind a stock truck these transmissions do not appear to be that fragile, IMO.

It's curious that no one has responded to your questions.

A bone stock transmission WILL turn the wheels in nuetral when jacked up. I have been there and done that, looking for a drivetrain noise. What next? Will we be checking to see how fast they turn? Until there is a value for torque transmitted to the rear wheels in nuetral there is NO POINT in doing this "test". Clutch drag is a fact of life with an auto transmission.

TommyTurbosaurs,

Yes my trans has also served me will and I have also pulled some heavy loads long distances. However with 100,000 miles on the odometer and a shutter at higway speed its time for a rebuild. What I would like is as much informatin on the after market transmissions avalible to make a competent desision as to which trans will serve my needs hauling hay live stock. Combined truck and trailer loads some times reach 26,000 pounds.

TJ

Thanks Bob,

I was also courious and went out and jacked her up. They turn but with no regester of MPH, but you cant stop them by hand.

My wife now knows were all nuts.

What clutch are we talking about?

I thought that ATS had stated that the clutch pack in the torque converter did not drag. I don't understand how jacking up the rearend will tell you anything regarding the torque converter. I would think the clutch packs in the transmission would have to drag(and they could) in order to see the rear wheels turn. I rebuild automatic transmissions in evil forktrucks that don't have a lock-up converter, and when you start them up in neutral, they will want to move forward(truck weighs 14K). Maybe I'm missing something here. . Did ATS state that they had no clutch drag in the transmission?

I tried to stop it by hand too, So does that show that DTT and Stock are close?

DING DING DING!!!!!!!! We have a winner!

Thanks for injecting a little common sense in this John.

Thats the point here

Bob, can I ask why we are nitpicking this to death? The test is pointless if you can even call it a test. The TC, as John pointed out, is where the drag was an issue.

A manual transmission will turn the wheels in nuetral.

I think if everyone tells Bob he made the best choice and the only choice he will let it go.

Bob, I have no doubt DTT makes an awesome transmission and possibly even the best. But don't defend it by trying to nit pick the competition to death.
