Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) EGR by pass Question

In the past there was a member who reported using Radio Shack resistors to

keep the check engine light from coming on when the EGR valve was removed.

He had also included a diagram.



Does any member remember who the person was or where his article is located.



I am apparently not using the correct search key words, because I cannot find it.

your truck does not have egr, only the 6. 7 has external egr

i should mention things have progressed since the time the resisters were used. now you do all of the deletes and a h&s or smarty programmer removes all codes and corrects other things

California 12 valve trucks, not sure what years, DID come with EGR.

Ya it works real well on the 98, passes smog like a champ, on the datastream it even looks like it is working, except th 98 has to have the physical parts intact too at least here in Cali

I can't attest to it passing smog, I sold the '98 over 5 years ago, before CA started smogging diesels.

I can say that the ck engine light stopped coming on after I installed the relay/resisters. I had blocked off the EGR with plates to keep the exhaust brake from forcing the EGR valve open and reducing the brakes efficiency.

The 6BT for 1996–1998 California Dodge Rams had the same ratings were 180 horsepower (134 kW; 182 PS) and 420 pound-feet (569 N·m) regardless of transmission. These engines also featured EGR Valves to meet the California Nitric Oxide emissions. All the Dodge Ram 6BT engines had a compression ratio of 17. 5:1. The EGR valve was dropped for the 24-valve ISB engines.

I'd like that diagram also, I removed my EGR years ago cuz the EGR crossover tube kept breaking, so I bought a new intake manifold and swapped it out. Check engine comes on once in a while. address is -- email address removed --,

Hi Dan,

Do you know if my truck will be able to pass CA smog inspection if I install the electronics mentioned in this string to clear the codes and get rid of the check engine light? My '98 was purchased in CA by the previous owner. He then moved out of state and removed the EGR. The engine now has a three piece ATS exhaust manifold and a 49 state intake manifold. There aren't any labels on the hood that anywhere indicate an EGR was once installed. I wonder if the SMOG guy will know the EGR was once there?

Two years ago I passed the SMOG check by reinstalling the EGR system. Since then, I noticed the OEM exhaust manifold was shrinking and I replaced it with the ATS manifold. At the same time, my mechanic put on a 49 state intake manifold. Now I'm wondering if I can get around having to install the EGR? I'd hate to have to buy an original exhaust manifold to hook the EGR tube to. In fact, I'm not sure where to find an original. The local dealer looked up the exhaust manifold and he said it's no longer in production and not in stock anywhere in his system.
