Ha! Time to do some better research.

My 100% stock 2018 gets within ± 5% of the mileage my 2005 got under nearly all circumstances, and the 05 had multiple efficiency upgrades to the truck and motor. The only time it doesn’t is due to extensive driving with the torque converter unlocked (05 was a manual), not the EGR.

There isn’t 2 mpg left on the table from the factory, let alone 8-14 mpg.

It's kinda like the guy that buys a $80k Mercedes and wants to brag about his fuel economy.

But since mine was tuned and deleted, the fuel economy has increased by 10 to 20% depending on circumsatancees.. I don't pay a lot of attention to it but I do notice. I run the 30 Horse tune. Could go tp to 200 (I think) but even on the 60 horse tune, I didn't like it at all. Just now getting used to the 30 horse tune and liking it. Still not as smooth as stock, though.

20% is huge, is that hand calc or EVIC?

It should be smoother than stock with a good tune.

It's hand calculated once or twice. Like I said, I don't pay a lot of attention to it but it's real.

The engine is smooth as can be, it's the transmission shifting, where and when the TC locks up, how the exhaust brake kicks in and shift flare that's annoying.

But it's getting better, I will say that. And I'm learning along with it. You do have to change your driving habits after a tune. For instance, I always locked out 6th gear in town. The computer would try to put you in 6th at 40MPH if it could so I locked it out. The new tune doesn't like that. It holds 5th much longer and if I lock out 6th, the exhaust brake kicks in and drags it down to 24MPH. Hard. Which is transmissiion tuning. It keeps the TC locked. No locked TC, no exhaust brake.

Plus, I'm getting a noticeable 'clunk' when it's decelerating at around 5 MPH. It's not terrible, it's not all the time and I'm not worried about it (A lot of peeps think it might be the Torsen Chunk) but it's not as smooth as stock.

But all in all, I prefer it over stock. Mama don't. She don't like the diesel fumes. I love diesel fumes. Seriously, I actually like the smell.

I was driving it the other day with the windows down and I could actually hear a little bit of Turbo whistle. Kinda got me excited :)

Went from not liking my truck very much at all (thanks EPA dirtbags) to loving it. 5" turbo back exhaust that my mechanic is still complaining about...... Loving it. Look for reasons to drive it now

With Tow Haul "ON" ???

I don't use tow/haul. I find it to be obnoxious with the EB on and I'd rather use the EB than TH. And the 40MPH thing might be a little exaggerated, but not by much.

Everybody's different in how they drive. I'm not towing these days so the way I drive is likely very different than how other people drive.

The point is, the fuel economy is definitely improved by a noticeable amount. Not some magical, mystery number, but by enough to matter. Is it enough to pay for the tune? Not even. But it's enough when thrown in with all the other reasons to tune and delete.

The reason I tuned and deleted is my DEF system was giving me trouble. They'd already replaced one pump at a cost (to them) of $2,200, I was getting near the end of the warranty (which is not that good on your DEF system) and I just got fed up and pulled the trigger. I live in South Florida. It's hot down here. As in, really hot. Heat is what causes most DEF problems. So...... I'd say half the diesels down here are tuned and deleted but I have no evidence other than observation.

The EPA doesn't put the kind of inhibitors on a Camry or any other gasser when their O2 sensor goes out or their Cat malfunctions, but if your diesel flatulates irregularly, it will leave you stranded in Deliverance West (by God) Virginia without any mercy. So I gave them the one finger salute.

John. I believe the 10% to 20% increase in fuel mileage should be more like 15% to 20%, at least on my truck it is. I have hand calculated my fuel mileage since new and have kept a running spread sheet, on an excel format for the last 12 years. I use the total year end average MPG's since this includes towing and non-towing mileage for my total MPG's. For the first two years the trucks was stock which is the baseline and the last 10 years the truck has ben modified.
Just saying!

Really hard to compare the fuel economy increase on a 07.5-12 to a 13+ motor. Heck, just a stock 13-18 will easily pull 15% better economy than a stock 07.5-12.

I lock on 5 and 6th gear all of the time even with T/H mode on when towing my trailer in city/town traffic. I will even use the transmission range switch to keep the engine RPM'S above 1,100 to ensure the exhaust brake is working as I stop. On my truck regardless of road speed I can use the exhaust brake as long as the engine RPM'S are above 1,100. The exhaust brake will cut out under 1,100 RPM's

When I am not towing and I am not using the T/H mode and I am in the city/town driving 5 and 6th gear is lock out. My truck seems to run better in the range of 1,600 to 1,900 RPM's . When I get above 1,900 RPM's and the road speed approaches 50MPH + I will unlock 5th gear and or 6th gear to maintain the 1,600RPM'S or so. This works for me but it may not work for everyone else.

John even my younger son's 2013.5 truck is seeing about a 17% improvement over stock. I asked him Saturday when he was over with his truck what was his mileage before and after!

I always use TH to keep it in the proper RPM's. Manually lock out does the same. I just hit one button once.
I never drive around with T/H mode engaged without towing. Just my preference! I think the T/H mode is too harsh when shifting and downshift as you are braking with the exhaust brake on, without a trailer attached.
So, I am just toggling one switch also.

I have trained myself to let off the go pedal at the correct distance from the stop light as I only have to lightly apply the brakes to come to a stop.

YEP, persoanl preference. I like the aggressive slowing and instant throttle response in TH/EB.
