Emergency Brake Set for High Idle to Work

I don't like how the 2011 high idle has to be engaged. Instead of just turning on the cruise and setting, now I have to set the emergency brake as well. Sometimes, I get caught by a long train here and since it has been over 100* every day, I turn on the high idle and wait.



When I tried it yesterday for the first time on the 2011 truck, it didn't come on. I looked at the owners manual and it says the emergency brake has to be set. So I set the emergency brake and it worked. As soon as it idled up, I released the EB and the high idle stayed engaged.



It is just a PITA to have to do that.

No, it is an auto. That's what irks me.

Your inconvenient new feature reminds me of the dumb interlock on the '06s that caused the truck to go berserk sounding the horn and flashing the lights if you had the driver's door even cracked open and shifted into reverse. I think that stupidity only lasted one model year. Whining customers trying to shift responsibility for their dumb mistakes to the manufacturer, ambulance chasing lawyers, and computer nerds run amuck!

It was a safety recall on earlier models which I've never allowed it to be done on my truck. Chrysler has finally given up sending me notices.



If the next owner wants it, he/she can have it installed.

Harvey, your comments seem to be very opinionated. I had an 05 truck that had a problem of jumping into reverse from park. It happened 3 or 4 times. I have been driving for a loooong time and I never had that problem before or after the 05. I traded the 05 for an 06 which had the horn alarm but never had a problem with the 06 jumping into reverse. I think Chrysler had fixed the problem in 06 but did the horn honking thing to make it look like they believed it was a driver problem. I have owned many kinds of vehicles from class 8 semi's to corvettes and never had this kind of problem with any other vehicle.

I can set the hign idle on mine w/o the e-brake on.

On my 2010, I could set it without the emergency brake on. This must be a change in the 2011 software because it won't turn on without the emergency brake engaged.

I always use my parking brake anyway, even with an auto.

I hav 2011 and my high idle works without settin the emergency brake. Mine is automatic.

How strange is this. I get stopped by the train on Saturday and out of habit, turned on the high idle without the emergency brake on and it worked. Maybe it is a "first time you do it" thing. Heck if I know. I tried it again when I got home and it worked. All I know is that the first time I tried it, it wouldn't come on until I set the emergency brake.

And yes the 06 honker 'fix' was a band-aid at best. If your 05 slipped out of park, I`d be jumpin on the dealers back to fix it. My old 05 never did. They wanted to do the honk fix to mine as well, back then. . The only honk they got was the one I gave em as I was leaving.

Ohya, and I`ve never used my high idle -without- the parking brake, as I only use it on winter mornings for a cold warm up. And since I live in mountainous terrain, I always set the PB, wherever I go. Dont need a runaway.

I agree with setting the brake when I'm not in it and the high idle is activated. I would imagine that a runaway with that thing idled up could be ugly.



Mine seems OK now. No idea why it wouldn't work the first time.

I have a 3500 Auto and it does not require the brake to be set... . strange...
