Broke turbo shaft

Folks, I recently wrecked my 03 6 speed that I bought new. RAV4 pulled out in front of me. Nailed her at 20 mph. Truck totaled by insurance due to mileage and age, but bought it back and now must jump through hoops to get her back on the road.

Anyway, I've been looking at other 3rd gen trucks to buy. Looking for rust free or close to rust free and have found several. Lots of 6.7's - all deleted. I hear in Pennsylvania deleted trucks will no longer pass inspection, so I'm avoiding them and staying with 5.9s.

Question, do 2006 5.9s have any emissions stuff, and, if so, what? My 03 has none.

Thanks.

Sorry to hear about your truck! I don't believe they do, unless you count the catalytic converter. I am certainly not aware of any on mine!

Same tuners should work? I have a van Aaken C3.2 on my 03.

Probably not, from what I see there are different versions of your box for different model years.
Also the ECM differs from year to year.

Your box is good for 03-04.5 from what I found.

Ok, thanks. Probably not a big deal as they have more power to begin with. I think van Aaken is out of business, so probably can't ask them. And there are other tuners I am sure.

Your Van Aken likely won’t work since the wiring harnesses are different. It’s a duration box, which is better than a pressure box, but I personally wouldn’t run a more duration without timing on a CR, especially on a 04.5-07 motor.

As far as emission go the cat, as mentioned, is the only external device.

Internal to the motor the cam (same part number as 03-04) includes some in-cylinder EGR, the pistons are non-retentrant design and why the 04.5-07’s produce much more soot in the oil, the 06-07’s reduced exhaust valve lash to presumably reduce exhaust flow for more in-cylinder EGR, and lastly the turbo has an undersized housing also contributing to the in-cylinder EGR.

So that’s how Cummins was able to meet the emissions at the time without an external EGR.

Great motors and they really wake up with a little timing, like a Smatry Jr.
