thank god i live in the country i think that the smog tests should be done on these in town buses i lived in long beach for 2 years and they were the worst but we all know that diesel does not emitte the harmful fumes that the gasers do :-{} :(

I heard from a test only smog guy in the LA area when getting another car smogged.

Within 3-5 years all diesels will be tested to get regisration. It will be worse than gas engine tests where depending on the year of your truck you are aloud to meet a certain standard. Worse than out of state smoke tests... All trucks will need to meet current model year truck standards for NOX, CO, particulate, etc. Yes a 96 diesel will need to blow as clean as a 2005. Sounds stupid but I would not doubt that in California. Also, if you don't pass the state will offer a buy back program or you need to retrofit your engine to new specs. Sounds scary to me!

Sweet music is gone!

Well, I'm a chicken! I put my ungutted cat back on for emissions test. :( Lost a pound or two of boost, but mostly my truck sounds like a plain old truck again! :{ The "big rig" sound is now bottled up inside. Makes me wonder why they put on a cat and a muffler. My muffler is one of Rip's, on backwards, with a 4" turbo back. It sounds really quiet and mellow now.

Sorry but I call BS on this one..... MN has NO emissions testing of any sort right now. Gas or Diesel. I highly doubt they will reinstate emissions testing THAT stringent at all. MAYBE in Cali..... but even that I doubt... . How many vehicles would be involved. No way.

ways around smog

i know for a fact this works in cali on gas rigs i live n the high desert so it was fairly easy for me when i had my gas motor n my truck ie 440 in a 85 dodge 1 ton crewcab truck it wasnt smog legal so i talked with a buddy in needles Ca. he told me to reg truck there and said benifit was no smog reguired so that was 6 yrs ago and truck still is reg out there n ive never had a problem i just go to local aaa office n pay reg every year when its due so guys try that if you run into troubles it worked for me hope this helps . :D

Well, NH is starting some emmisions testing this year. Suppost to connect to some ODB port to test ... ain't got a clue what that is or if I even have an ODB port.

Why doesn't Kommiefornia fall off into the Pacific and do us all a favor and put themselves out of our missery ... I'm sick of the Kommifornia infection spreading to rest of the country.

I'll make sure i leave before kalifornia falls offf. please please liberals go away :)

Your 97 does have a obd2 port, should be under the dash... . it will allow the smog nazis to run the code to see if you have any faulty emissions codes. dont worry, diesels dont have o2 sensors to check for cat efficiancy :-D

Tennessee

Some counties in Tennessee will be initiating diesel emission testing on April 1. Here is an excerpt:

Diesel vehicles

Between 1975 and 2001 must pass an idle test of 10% opacity for at least 10 consecutive seconds and a gas cap check. 2002 models or newer must pass OBD test and gas cap check. (If the vehicle is not equipped with OBD, test will default to an idle test. )

That is all it says... nothing about a visual inspection.

Oo. Only an idle test Oo. No CAT inspection. Oo.

I just went through emmissions again today. Passed with 0. 0% opacity. This is with 370 injectors and my plate full forward. Since there is no load put on the engine, there's no smoke. $28 left my wallet for the pleasure... ... .

Smogged today... posted 0. 0%, full forward, ground plate. Why bother? For $37. 50, that's why! I see older gassers running down the road burning more oil than gas and they fail once, if they can't get it fixed, it's ok!
