04 5.9 FASS Install need help

Power steering

A few weeks ago I was driving on the Highway about 65 and Engine dies as if I turned off the key.
pulled over and tried starting for the next 20 min, it cranked over with no problem. I assumed since I never have replaced the Bendix lift pump and I had 106k miles that I must be that. I have no gauges so had it towed to a Diesel Shop with great repuation they checked it all out and said there were no error codes so we replaced the on block benix with a Fass Taitainium top of the line lift pump mounting back by the tank.
Ran fine for a 80 miles and than this morning happend again. Started right up started to back it out of the driveway and died like i turned of the key. Same as last time so I guess it wasnt the lift pump but still very happy i got the fass as it was better proformance and I think it protects my Injector Pump So not worried about that. Any ideas?? Again no error codes when the shop read it and I checked the Turn Key 3 times with no codes in the odemeter window... Thanks, Buddman

You need a fuel pressure gauge. Installed one or a shop one you can connect of the injection pump and tape the drivers side wiper.

It could be a air leak in the line or a pickup tube issue in the tank.

Put a longer clear hose of the water drain on the fuel filter and stick the end in a jug. Open the drain valve and bump the starter and see if you see a lot of air bubbles in the hose.

SnoKing, I'll have to sort out the fuel gauge, I just had the Fass Fuel pump 95gpm installed its the one that removed all the air bubbles and mirco filter by a shop two weeks ago after the first occurance of the engine dying. They installed the new Fass in front of the back wheel well to the bed next to tank and removed the block mount fuel filter that had the water drain on it. They also left the old bendix pump attached to block and only disconeted the fuel inlet and outlet so when you bump the starter it still turns on. Not sure why they did this other than maybe if disconected it would generate an error code. I need to sort this out as well. I tried again to start this morning and decided to crank it for 90 seconds and it started BUT than after running a little rough for 45 seconds it shut right down again. Let it sit for 10 min and cranked again for about 90 seconds and it started again and than shut down. Driving me nuts... I hate to take it to a shop and without any error codes generated they ushally are not knowlegable enough to correctly troubleshoot without the computer telling what the problem is as well as playing the shotgun repair game where they say oh it must be the VP44, if thats not it maybe the ECM or vapor lock.

I will go down and get a fuel gauge test kit from Napa Auto Parts as they will loan it out at no charge. Question, Why do I need to tape the drivers side wiper? not sure what you mean. Thanks,

My truck died on the way to work one day just like yours did (had about 129k at the time) = as if the key was turned off and it wouldn't start. LP gage showed 12PSI, at the time I had the stock LP mounted on the frame. Had it towed home, no codes, tried bleeding the injector lines got nothing. It was the VP. If you need a VP, and I hope you don't (but sounds like it) I got mine from Thoroughbred Diesel and it has worked without a hitch - present mileage 245k. Keep us posted.

They should have added a relay to the existing LP wiring to run the new LP. If it is wired direct that might be part of the problem along with a VP-44 going bad. The VP-44 does not like a lot of head pressure to start and run and if it is borderline it might not like it running.

I called Fass today and they said I should just unplug the old LP and is shouldnt effect anything but strange the shop that installed it didnt do remove it or at the very least unplug it. Looks like they wired direct to battery and key best I can tell.
Fass also mentiond air in the lines and I should bleed the fuel line and also check the voltage at to the fuel pump as their was some issues with low or high votage generated by the ECM that can also casue the this problem. I replaced the VP44 years ago and Thank God it was still under warrenty. This has happend 4 times now where it just dies. When it does run it runs great so wondering based on this if the VP might still be suspect and if so why it hasnt generated an error code.

You have the same symptoms as one of my students that just installed a FASS in his 24v. See the post I put in 2nd gen. He sent the pump back to FASS Friday.

So a friend said are you sure you have enough gas in the tank, I said yeh almost a 1/2 Tank. He said that gauges are not accurate and and do crap out as well as parked on a driveway that had an uphill grade. So what the hell, went down and bought 5 gallons to put into the tank, cranked it for about 30 seconds and it started and didn't die on me, drove it down and filled the tank and it took 27.7 Gallon + the 4.8 gallons from the gas can. Total 32.5 on a 34 gallon tank. taking it out on the freeway noticed it had less power and would not downshift to lower gear when I floored it to shift into passing gear. Not sure what that is about. I assume the ECM is confused?
