Ok I did a search and didn't find anything scanning. I am sitting here at work bored and wondering, hmmm I keep hearing about exhaust brakes. In the issue of the mag before the current one I think I saw something about valves not sure what controlled them but the valves in question could be controlled to make a real engine brake. My ? is has any one done this with our trucks or is it even possible? I love the sound of the real engine brakes. Just wondering thanks. Oo.

In a real engine brake the exhaust valves are opened at appoximately the same time that the injector would fire. Thus dumping the compressed air. With the bigger engines there is usually a cam lobe that controls the injectors. Jacobs uses trapped oil in a passage so that when the injector push rod is coming up it pushes down on a cylinder opening the exhaust valve.

The problem with our engines is timing the valve opening event. Because of the Bosch pump there is no method of opening the valves. I am sure that with enough money and modern day electronics one could come up with a system that would work. but the cost would be enormous.

I sure would like to hear my truck coming down the mountain banging like a big rig.

I have a pac-brake brand exhaust brake on my 02 6spd love it will make your brakes last forever. also gives the exhaust a different kind of bark.
