2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Need Fuel Transfer Pump

1999 1/2, 145K miles, Everything has Amsoil, by-pass filter system also Amsoil. Blue Chip chip installed.

I was just exiting the supermarket parking lot and coming up to traffic speed when my engine died. Absolutely no warning. No lights came on, nothing. I have the small, yellow fuel pressure light installed by Blue Chip, that light did not come on.

I opened the hood, climbed back inside the truck and tried to start. The engine just spins. It seems to spin very fast just using the starter. Release the key, climbed out again and looked at the fuel filter area of the engine compartment. There was a "fast ticking" sound coming from the fuel filter area, or just in back of the fuel filter. (Very hard to determine exactly because of the traffic noise).

The truck was towed into a mechanic's shop but by his admission, the shop is not a diesel repair shop.

I suspect the injector pump went bad on me, but this is just a wild guess. There was absolutely no indication something was wrong. The engine just stopped. If I turn the key on, all dash lights cycle through as normal, then go off indicating the truck is ready to start. My little fuel pressure light (Blue Chip), goes to off as normal, indicating I do have fuel pressure.

Any suggestions... other than to throw a gallon of gas on it and burn the truck to a crisp! :{

do the key on, off , on,off, on and watch for codes in your odometer and let us know what comes up.

you could crack a injector line and try to start the motor for a couple of seconds, then check to see if any fuel was pushed out or not. Im guessing the VP died :(

I had the truck towed to a mechanic. I will take a ride up there and do the tests, if the truck is parked outside. If he parked it inside, I'll be out of luck until Monday. He does not have diesel experiance so any help to diagnose is good. What is the VP44? Should I close my eyes and stick my fingers in my ears when you tell me?

Thanks,

Dick

I believe that this only works on a 2000-2002 truck. 1999 will require a scanner. SNOKING

I had to drive to Tucson to get to my truck. The mechanic I had it towed to read the codes for me. Code 1688 "Internal Injector Pump Failure". So I would say your diagnose is correct. The injector pump has died and gone to IP heaven. The sound you hear is me, crying. I have to have the truck towed to a diesel shop, probably Desert Diesel in Tucson, for repair.

Thanks for the good input.

Dick

PS: For us dummies, is there a place to go that will tell me the codes all of you use to describe items on your trucks? For example; DTT, BHAF, VP, ect?

Thank you everyone for being so helpful. As I stated, the truck was towed into a shop, not close to my house. There was no way I could work on the truck where it was. Anyway, I had it towed again to Tucson's "Desert Diesel", they ran the diagnostics and told me the injector pump was bad. Almost $2500 later my truck was running as well as it did when new. The Bosch unit to replace the injector pump included a new lift pump and fuel filter. I replaced the lift pump about 8K miles ago and the fuel filter was new, but to maintain the warrantee on the injector pump, those items had to be replaced also. So, my entire fuel feed system is new. They also adjusted the valves while the truck was in the shop. It really runs like a dream.

My special thanks to all of you that took time to help me. By the time I had the work done, I was hardened to the shock of how much it would cost and I could dwell on how well the truck was running.

Talk soon, and happy Easter everyone...

Dick

My truck did the same kind of thing about a month ago. I came out of walmart and it would spin, but not even try to start. I was not showing any fuel pressure on the gauge( lift pump stopped running). So i had it towed home and payed the bill. He leaves and the truck started and ran fine, but was showing check engine light. Had code read and showed crank position sensor. I replaced sensor and truck ran fine. I then changed to a GDP kit for insurance. Long post, just putting out info for others. Randy
