was driving my husbands truck and the check engine light came on. all guages looked okay and running okay. got it home and parked it. fluids okay. engine light not coming on now, running fine. want to find out if there is a way to pull up the engine codes manually. our 98 jeep tj you can pull them up yourself with the ignition. is there any way to do that with the dodge? thanks.

On some model years swiching key switch from off to on three times (leaving in on the third time). However I dont think that trick works on 98 or 99 24valves. Can borrow a scanner from autozone and pull codes that way.

Drive to autozone and they will pull the codes for free. If there are any, write them down and ask the guy to erase them, and see if anything returns.
If you don't clear the codes, the ecm will try to adjust for the code and the truck won't run right. This happened to me on my wife's car. I barley made it to town to pull the codes, i wrote them down and had him clear them. The car fired right up and ran great from then on.

Most would be the key word ;)
does not work on '99s for sure and pretty sure it does not work on '98 (at least 24valves)
