Engine Lost

What I am still not clear on is what failed and why. Sure a new (complete ?) engine is nice, but was it the culprit or the victim? What I am driving at is, will a new engine prevent this failure from happening again? On top of all that cast iron is a series of electrical and fuel managment components, as well as cooling and exhaust systems. I would make it clear to the dealer should this (or any) problem (re)surface- its new truck time. Good Luck-

But there is no malfunction that could occur in any electical or fuel systems that would result in diesel fuel diluting the crankcase oil, as he originally posted. That is definitely a hardware error, and unless he has the absolute worst luck in the world, there's no way the replacement motor will exhibit this same problem.

you are the third truck that I know that has happened to and the other two only got a new lower end and not a complete new engine.

Well now, dont I feel like a jacksss. I was sure the injectors were fired by the computer, connected via an electrical connection. And you further correct me by telling me there is no way an injector driver, for whatever reason, couldnt be keeping an injector open, or timed wrong. I stand corrected.

Not a bad idea - as long as we could sort out the sorehead unreasonable owners from legitimate complaints.

I haven't had any real problems with my truck, but every time I have taken it to the dealer DC has sent me a survey questionaire. We (read someone who has the time and skills) could set up dealer rating system that mimics that survey. There would have to be a section for each dealer listed, and the rating would be determined by a simple average score for each question (text scores converted to numbers). If owners would input their responses into the rating questionaire we'd see a real time rating for listed dealers. The more responses a dealer gets, the less an individual experience will skew the results. Once you get a few dozen scores tallied it should be a fair representation of that dealer. After that, only a consistent trend of good or bad scores would significantly alter the ratings. One good or bad entry would have little effect.

Well thats fine and dandy and all that BUT! it has its drawbacks. I worked a NISSAN dealer 14 years in DOWNTOWN Atlanta. We had for years a EXCELLENT rating and a thriving service dept. Long term employees,service Manger with 15 years experience,long term techs that ENJOYED their product and for the most part their job. Two long term advisor's. We also played with Datsun's/Nissan's and hot rodded them etc. MOVED to GwinnettThe BURBS. ITS SUCKED. Techs hated it. WE HATED it. The most obnoxious,demanding SPOILED BRATS in the world(Fastest growing county in Georgia for several years)The nastiest,rudest comments,most RIP OFF us(The dealer)folks. We NEVER imagined it could be so bad. Tried FREE rentals,Lady's day,specials etc. The CSI rating NEVER came up. Visited other dealers there. Honda/Ford/Mitsubishi/Bmw etc. ALL THEIR RATINGS SUCKED. I had techs threaten to quit because of the BURBS. Now I find out YEARS later that the UNIVERSITY of GEORGIA also has a problem. Says the KIDS from back then from that county create 90% of THEIR headache and TRACKED this for a decade. So I don't think to much of the survey thing. I still can't stand that county and I'm wary of folks who say they live there. Spoiled BRATS and their offspring also. Oo. I could tell you MANY horror stories of how our FREE loaner cars were returned,Refusing to pay the bill on THEIR auto and YOU CAN"T HOLD THEM on a lein like folks think. You got to SUE them and some said I don't care I have NO MONEY but wanted it fixed. Service advisors SLAPPED etc. I could go on. It seemed like a NEW ERA started in 1984/1985 and I bet in areas still continues. Later I left and went to work in a smaller town and much of that was fine. I could tell some stories about the PUBLIC and some of their lies and MADE UP stories.

Keep in mind that it would be TDR members contributing, and not the unwashed masses. We're a cut above...

Well the TDR members are a cut above the other auto and Dodge websites I visit. Sorry Dean and your a cut above from the posts I've seen you make over the last year or better. Even the street BROS were better paying and easier customers to deal with then the YUPPIES. The Yuppies even drove the most un serviced ragged out autos I ever came across. Spend $500 or god forbid a $1000 on one. Naw it was easier for them to trade and just make notes another decade cause besides no maintance they also drove it 100k in 3 years. Talk about NASTY WALLY wagons. We had some we used seat covers NOT to keep them clean but to keep our butt clean. Greese would have been a benifit to them. that was the start of AUTO MALLS also. I gag at the thought of even thinking about buying a car at one of those places. :--)BUT back to the subject at hand. The ones that lost a motor at 400 or even 1000 miles them folkes GOT another auto/truck with no hassel. had one WE(300zx) wrecked on a test drive,bought eleswhere with $4500 worth of damage(5000 miles) and HE got a loner for THREE weeks,traded him out of it(for brand new) at NO exspence to him and WE absored the rest.

Well I have my truck back and running perfect, they did a great job and not one scratch on body. It took a week to get truck back on road, the dealer is in burlington,WA.

Mechanic called me next day to inform me he was getting ready to pull head on old engine and invited me out to check it out. results a hole the size of a dime in #6 piston and fwd intake valve edge chipped about a third of valve.

Contacted Cummins and they say it was because of injector failure sticking in open position and acting a blow torch burning hole through piston.

All I can say is if you hear a jack hammer pounding under hood SHUT-IT-DOWN QUICK.

AH, good 'ol #6!



And we STILL have a few here claiming #6 is no more subject to problems than the other cylinders - but the vast majority *I* have seen here either are #6, or involve it in the failure...

That's a great story, Butch (albieit a bit inconvenient for you). There will always be failures of all machines and I believe Cummins maintain's a very minimal margin of error. The good part is that you were taken care of by a solid dealership and everybody loves to hear a good dealer story
