Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Valve adjustments

Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 400k miles too much??

SO I have been listening to my buddies diesels and theirs seem to be a little quieter in the area of engine noise. I realize that I have 300,000 miles but is it to much to ask that I want it a little quieter in the engine compartment area. I love to hear my exhaust but not so much engine. other question is 100 a good price for gauges that all I need is the fuel pressure regulator? that is full pillar and EGT,Boost, Fuel Pressure!?

come on is this noise just the valves needing adjustment? or is it a sign of a bigger problem arrising?

Those gauges and the pillar @ $100! That's a steal!!!

Ditto on the valve adjustment . . . when was last time it was done???

yeah that is a great price it needs one part for the fuel pressure but that is no biggie especially compared to normal!! Plus they match with the tweeter!! can't beat that. I am gonna do a valve adjustment this weekend I hope it helos out! I hope I don't screw up anything lol!

Also keep in mind that engine noise is the loudest on 98 to 2002 24 valves so if your comparing it to a buddies 12 valve or commonrail you probably have nothing to worry about. A valve adjustment will go a long ways. Set them at . 09 intake and . 19 exhaust.

Tick tap rattle clatter knock

I posted this on a differand site

A few weeks ago I was readng a thread about a tapping sound coming from the top of the engine. I had the same problem! :confused:So I tryed most of the sugestions, use injector cleaner (4 tanks of fuel ) no change. As one of the guys said to clean the deposits from the injectios to drive it like I stole it still no help. The noise now has went from a tap to a rattle in about 1300M. :(Drove from Houstion TX to South AL(600+M) while there took it by the D/S they said it needed a valve adjustment. After adjusting the valves the rattle was still there they said it could be a bad injector and couldn't check it due to equipment problems. Drove back to Houston (600+M) took it by a Cummins dealer to busy to lissen to it. #@$%!Drove home to South LA. (300M) now the rattle is now a clatter/knock. I have family that work for Southland Dodge in Houma LA in the race shop. So I took it there the head mechanic is the diesel diagonostic tec and checked the valves and injectors all was OK. He used a listening device they have on the block and come back with bad news. The noise was coming form the wrist pin or a rod bearing. The cost for the repair was going to be around 4500. 00 to 5500. 00:--) :shocked:if the cylinder and crank was OK. Not wanting to spin that much money on an 03 truck I traded for a 08 2500 6. 7. So far I have have driven the new druck aboud 3000m and happy with it but I sure wanted to keep my 03 it was paid for. :{ Now I trying to find out what mod's I can do to the with out busting my warrenty The stuff I had on the my 03 don't fit the 08:(

For all ya'll with engine noise tick or tap Good Luck!!!

I don't know how you can hear anything under the hood with all the noise that comes from there. :-laf

A Mechanic's stethoscope (plugs into both ears) really allows you to pinpoint noises regardless of how loud the surrounding area is. Great tool.

So instead of spending $5500 you spent $40000 to address the same problem?

Guess he really wanted a 3rd Gen anyway. Some folks just don't want to mess with an engine swap/rebuild. Unfortunately (according to wifey :-{}) and fortunately (according to me ;)), if I was in the same situation I'd probably look at this as the opportunity to Drop an "A" bomb; big cam, twins, worked head etc. etc. etc. :-laf.

It would probably be an easy way to convince wifey it was cheaper than a new 40k truck - but then you never really know . . .

I agree. That would be my big chance to get THE truck I wanted. ALL the goodies.

"Hey honey, this new one is only $40000, but you know, for about $ 6000, I can fix our old one..... ":D

OK,OK I hear ya. Let's have a little fun. I'll try to explain to you guys still dragging your knuckles with skulls thicker than mine :-laf;);)

1st thing is the repair could be much higher if the cylinder or crank was damaged to the tune of another 2 to 3000. 00 on a truck with the milage was only worth about 12K.

2nd I couldn't take the downtime for the repair.

3rd The new truck was 46k list for the 08 Laramie 2500, walk out price 30k flat at Southland Dodge in Houma, LA. That's what I paid for my 03!!

4th What else was I going to buy a ferd or chibby. (NOT) Besides I would have to throw out all my TDR, Dodge and Mopar Stuff. Hell I still have almost 2 years left on my TDR subscription. LOL:D

5th The only name on the truck is mine other than the bank. Is wifie on yours? LOL:-laf

6th Now I have a s_ _ _ pot of aftermarket stuff I can't use:{

7th The 08 is a very nice truck but its stock:( now I have to start over#@$%!

If you guys have any other questions or commits maybe we can have some more fun. LOL

I'm going to miss my old ride I'm looking forward modifying my new one. The problem is all the stuff I had on my 03 was installed after the warranty was out, now I have to see what I can change without busting the warranty.

Ya'll be safe out there and have fun with your trucks. Hope you don't have a tap, raddle or knock in your future

Rawland

No nooooo Rawland!:D

3. your end was STILL $18000!

4. See number 2.

5. The Bank? It was PAID for! And since my wife is the supreme ruler and keeper of the FunBox;) She pretty much gets her way.
