Have a 2000 5.9 with 170k. Given the age I’m concerned that pulley bearings are going to fail soon. Given I tow a camper with the vehicle, trying to avoid future roadside issues.

Looking to do the work myself but looking for any/all guidance. If anyone has docs/pics to share or can direct me to an existing TDR thread, I’d be most appreciative.

I have modified the top of my radiator shroud so that I can easily remove the top portion. This makes for great access to the belt tensioner from the top. Before for any long trips I can now remove the tension on the serpentine belt and easily check each rotating component for possible bearing problems. I have logged 344,000 miles replacing one belt tensioner and one water pump and a couple of serpentine belts. Both were operating fine but I changed them for maintenance reasons at 215,000 miles.

For me making everything easily accessible for inspection gives me great peace mind when preparing for a long trip.

Here are some pictures. I used two zip ties on each side for quick removal and installation. The last two picture show where the cut was made on the shroud.

I considered that route, but I didn't like the idea of having a lot of hardware that could be easily dropped while installing and removing. Also the weight of the hardware could cause the shroud to droop. The zip ties have worked flawlessly for a three or four years now and are easy to replace when re-installing the shroud.
