Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) water pump: gear driven?

I had posted awhile ago about white smoke when cold & huffing out of breather all the time. A few good suggestions by you guys led me to a compression and leak down test only to find compression leaking past the rings in one cylinder.

I have not done anything with it due to the fact the guy I bought the truck from was supposed to buy it back from me. It now appears he isn't going to. I will have to fix the truck on my own.

So my question is I am looking for suggestions on how I should go about it. Is there anywhere I can get a reman short block or should I pull and rebuild it myself. The engine has 106,000 miles on it at this time. I have assembled plenty of gas motors in my toys in the past, this diesel thing is a little new to me. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I just want it fixed so I can put on all the stuff I have waiting to BOMB this thing. Thanks... Andrew

No it's not a head gasket, there is definately compression in the crankcase and raw fuel out the exhaust until it warms up. It is in the bottom end.

reman?

I would look at this way what is the cost of a re-man motor to putting in the pistons you want, machining the motor, down time and plus whatever goodies you want to add. What are you looking to get out of this motor performance or are you happy with stock?

I would just put new rings and bearings in the thing and go... much cheaper than "reman", and you'll know the job was done right. I think you can get a ring/bearing/gasket kit for about $500 or so.

Even if I end up pulling and repairing it myself, I am not too concerned with high horsepower numbers. I have my other toys for that. I already have for the truck waiting to install an air intake setup, 4" exhaust, and triple pod with boost, pyro, & fuel. Either way while the motor is out I will change the clutch so later I can do injectors and some type of a box. All this can be done with the stock setup. My only concern which really isn't a big deal is the condition fo the cylinder walls. If I had to start boring my block would it be more or less cost effective? I haven't started pricing it either way, so that is why I posted this. I figured someone might have an idea on pricing since I am sure I am not the only one to have to replace a 24v bottom end.

With that little mileage, I've never seen anybody that couldn't still see crosshatching. I blowed hell outta mine so decision was easier. I think you're way ahead rebuilding since all you've got is alittle blowby. Too bad the seller isn't a man of his word, integrity seems harder to find these days.
