Thank you for all the responses thus far on my previous post, I was/am presently surprised with the help. I probably should have asked this question the first time, now I'm fixated on asking. Will there be any harm having the tailpipe under water as I back the boat in? Should I leave the engine running or shut it off? Please help.

I can't see that it would be any problem. Got to be less back pressure than an exhaust brake.

There was a story in the TDR mag. from a gentleman that was doing the same thing as YOU!

He was backing in at the loading ramp and left the truck running while he got out to un-hitch the boat.

While he was pulling off the boat, either the truck slipped out park. . or the E-Brake popped out.
The whole truck and trailer combo went for a swim!!!

Well that Cummins is one strong engine. . but it can't change the laws of physics...

Try as they might. . those pistons just couldn't compress water!!!

Result: TOTAL WIPEOUT!!!!!!

I guess the real question for you is... . do you really WANT to keep it running??

If you do... Stay In Ther Drivers seat. . and let someone else off-load the boat!

Have Fun!!

Three words came directly to mind when I saw that picture, "OH MY GOD". "S--T" was a very close second. Poor Puppy.

Seeing Evan's rather sobering picture reminded why I always used to launch driving forward in my old '81 Ram 318 4x4 5spd. . I custom fabricated a receiver hitch for the front of the old Dodge and used it exclusively for launching. It precluded the need to rely on the parking brake which never did work well enough to stop the truck from rolling astern. The parking brake in my '97 DC Ram seems better in that regard. Regardless, the new truck won't be going anywhere near the saltchuck. That's what the old '81 is for, amongst other rough chores like firewood and bushbeating. For launching, a front hitch is the way to go IMO. And yes, it sure does help to stay at the wheel. Cheers, Pete.

There is nothing better than sitting next to a seasonal boat ramp with a 6 pack.

Usually it is just good fun.

Sometimes you really feel bad for the driver, like that shot above.

Yeah but think how far the signal will travel with those antennas grounded so well #ad
Time to hitch up the BIG mule...
