I've got a DW4 on my '98 and a DW5 on the '04. The '04 warms up much quicker. Go for the DW5. I bought the DW5 from Gregg Landry at Lubrication Specialists. That was the best price I could find, and about 200 less that what I paid for the DW4 in '98. Real good guy to deal with and he will walk you through the install. He also helped me resolve a problem I had with my DW4.

Fuel consumption with Espar?

This question is directed at the owners of an Espar or Webasto heaters. "How much fuel will the heaters consume in an hour or so and how long would one need to have it running, say, if it's deadly cold out and the truck has been sitting for a week or 2 in the cold... I'm talking northern Canada cold here, to have the engine warm (toasty) to start nicely?

The Espar Computer will only allow two hours max running time to conserve fuel and your batteries. I would guess at that time limit you are burning about 12oz. or less as this is a guess never noticed any huge drop in fuel use. The Espar does not use fuel every minute that it is running.

espar

a D5 will use very close to 1 cup of fuel per hour if it were on high the whole time but it does not stay on full boar all the time it adjusts to maintain a temp like your thermostat at home. from using mine for two winters i would say for a two hour cycle it is about a cup. as for warm up time 1/2 hour will be about as good as being plugged in over night if its bitter midwest or canada cold an hour or so will be heating the cab defrosting your windows starting like a june day and the temp gage will jump up (after a few seconds) about half way and be up to full temp very quickly. you will like it!

Alright I've decided I NEEEED one of these, now the question espar or webasto?

If I get one (and I really want one), I'll get whichever is the smaller package. No need to clutter up my engine compartment any more than it already is.

Today in the mail I got a product CD from Webasto... I get the impression their systems are a little cheaper.

Thx for the replies...

... incidentally, when I went to the Cummins parts department in Edmonton to pick up my oil drain plug (which I installed today, finally) as soon as you walked in, there is an Espar heating unit on the display. This one looks as big as a small t. v. , it was probably for the big rigs.

R. Battelle do you mean cheaper in price, quality or both? I live very near Fenton, MI and I think Webasto has a "home base" there. Not sure, just starting to shop.

I want one of these heaters as well. I am leaning towards the webasto. They have a remote start option that I think will be more usefull then a 7 day timer.

a remote start would be cool. don't discount the timer though! you can set it for an hour or two before you go to work whatever days you work and not have to worry about turning it on! nice toasty truck in morning!! the espar at cummins was for big rigs. the D5 is about 2-3 thick and 6 by 6 or so H and W. normally it gets mounted (mine was) on the frame rail out of the way kind of inbetween fuel tank and engine. i don't know much about the other one so i will not comment on it either way but whatever you choose please go for quality not just price!! is two hundred bucks worth taking a chance on problems later?

The Espar has a remote option. I have the 7 day timer and the remote so I can set the timer for planned trips, and use the remote for the unplanned ones.

Mine is mounted on the frame rail on the passenger side, rather than in the engine compartment. It is pretty much under the passenger seat.

Heres a couple pictures on a half assed web page we did after my install.

I posted on another forum that they are like a remote for your TV. If you've never had one it's no big deal. But once you use it, you cant live without it.

The remote is worthless, works for about 100ft. I hooked it to an autopage remote starter. But I use the 7 day timer the most.

I meant cheaper in price, not quality.

DCasten's pics indicate these things are MUCH smaller than I thought they were!

I have read some posts around here about problems with the Espar burner...

I'm thinking of becoming a dist for Espar... . Have all the information on my desk... .

I'd be happy to support a group buy if your interested... . but I'm a few days away from making this happen... .

As I see it. . there are 2 units that will function... on is the D4 at 14,700 BTU and the other is the D5 at 17,000 BTU...

I'm looking at several for my tucks. . we used to just let them sit and run but now look for something that would save fuel.....

Anyway I'll know if a few days what's up...

Jim / Pacific Clutch & Brake.....

Any decision on the dealership? :D Oo. :D

I have the remote and installed a extra antenna. I think the range is aprox. 300 feet. However with the Seven Day computer you can program three days in advance. I bought my Espar used and it is five years old before I installed it. So no burner problems noticed. Rick

Group Buy

Keep Me in Mind for the group Buy option. Set up a pay pal account and collecting money is a snap. I definetley want a D-5 :-laf
