Exhaust brake and extended idling

I'm going to get an exhaust brake and am wondering if I can let the truck idle for long periods of time with the brake on this winter. I want to be able to idle for about 20-30 minutes for warm up as well as I only have a 1 mile commute to work. Would this be a problem? Thanks

I have a Jacobs (Mopar) E-brake and when it was installed, I was told I could leave it on all the time as idling with it on did not adversely effect the engine. The written instuctions included with the unit were very brief and mentioned using the E-brake for faster winter warm-up. I have my brake on almost 100% of the time, disengaging it only when it slows me down too much on minor grades.

I have a BD brake and I can idle it all day long if I wanted to. If you go with the BD brake (don't know about others) you won't have to idle anywhere near 20 minutes for a warmup - in 5 minutes in 0 degree weather my truck with the exhaust brake on is up to full operating temp!

Just like Steve's BD,my Jacobs brake fully warms up the Cummins in 5 minutes. I don't see needing to leave it running for 1/2 an hour. I have left it running for up to 45 min,and had no problems,just keep an eye on your water temp gauge if you're leaving it that long.



Wait a sec... why leave a truck idling 20-30min just to warm up to drive ONE mile??? You can walk and get there quicker.

I don't know,, *I* think in my "humble" opinion,, lol, yah right, "HUMBLE',, anyway. . It would be okay to idle for a second, but for 20 minutes, I'm not sure.



I think you should do something like this insted of 20 idling minutes.



Buy some oil pan heaters,, the magnetic type,, also plug in the block heater.

Before you crank the truck, let the grid heaters warm up (Wait to start light goes out)

Idle for about 30-60 seconds,, then rev the motor to 1,200RPM for about 15 seconds,, then just go ahead and tak-off. .

for the first 10 seconds of idling I would recomend not using the e-brake,, just because *I* think parts need to move for a second before being put under a load. I'm no mechanic though,, this just sounds like a good practice

Just remember to turn it off if the roads are at all slippery. No faster way to go for a quick spin, than when you let off going into a curve and the back wheels slow down faster than the truck.

Cripes! I forgot all about the E brake and ice or packed snow! Definitely turn it off on those surfaces, especially if empty. I have a very slight hill before the turn into my drive and forgot to flip the switch off... ..... It was only a quick clutching that kept me from altering the fence line and my truck.
