Exhaust Brake Quit Working

I've got a BD exhaust brake I had installed in 2000. I use it when I tow and also use it frequently when going down a steep grade on snowpacked roads. I usually turn the brake off once I get down the hill, but the other day I forgot and left it on. The next day I noticed the indicater lite was on but the brake wasn't working. Don't know if it quit working because I left it on too long or it finally just gave out. Any help in diagnosing the problem would be appreciated. Hate to spend big bucks to have it replaced.

Friend has a 99' w/BD brake. He's mentioned something about cleaning a switch that has problems with soot. Supposed to be a quick fix.

Is your brake vacuum or air actuated, turbo mount or in-line type.

In any event, check to see if the valve butterfly is frozen by manually rotating it. If yes you may be able to free it up with penetrating oil and vigorous manipulation. If it's free, then it's a matter of back-tracking until you find the problem. Is there vacuum (air pressure) at the actuator, at the control valve, etc. , then on up the line.

One fairly common problem with the vacuum operated types is gumming up of the spool valve. They are fairly easy to service.

PS. I've left mine turned on for most of the last 4 years without problem so I doubt that's what's wrong.

Check for power to the switch... . then check for power at the vacuum solenoid. If you have power at the solenoid..... it is probably the butterfly frozen or a vacuum leak.
