mine cracked too,, right around 50K too.
Dealer said it wasn't under warrenty. .

Instead of buying another stock manifold.
I bought an ATS Manifold, was a pain to get on, but really freed up the engine.
My truck is stock, and the ATS manifold, really helped the engine pick up RPM quicker around 3K RPMS

only got 1800 miles on it no cracks. Want to see how long it will last bring it by and I'll weld it up. Done lots of cast welding just not ex manifolds.

Just curious, has anyone had an non-pyro equipped exhaust manifold crack?

My truck was a non-pyro equiped crack.
The symptoms I had were a LOUD Ticking, and EXTREMEMLY SLOW turbo spool up, it was nearly non-exsistant.
When my father had the truck, the manifold started cracking,, and by the time I got the truck the manifold had a LARGE crack in it.

When I removed the old manifold, it was literally in two peices.
Split nearly perfectly in half.

No cracks in my OE exhaust manifold. Up until the time I installed my ATS exhaust manifold, I had the pyrometer thermocouple POST-turbo (about 43k mi. ). I also had a BD exhaust brake set fairly aggressively. The only other thing I can add is that I ALWAYS let the EGTs cool to less than 350 deg. F. (remember, post turbo), prior to engine shut-off). This may or may not be a contributing factor. After adding my ATS exhaust manifold and upgrading to SPA gauges, I installed the thermocouple PRE-turbo. I now shut down the engine at below 300 deg. F.

The Powershop in Enumclaw has a ton of cracked manifolds both with and without pyro probe holes. Somehow, guys got these thing real hot. I too think hot shutdowns (400+) have something to do with it.

Mine cracked in my 98. 5 at 75k miles. Dealer replaced it for free #ad
It also sheared off two exhaust manifold bolts.

A friend of mine had his 98. 5 crack at 105k. No warranty there.

Another friends '01 ETH cracked at 15k shearing one manifold bolt. Replaced under warranty. Yes, the '01 is still a one piece manifold.

All three were drilled for a pyro but the crack was no where near the pyro hole. Down in the crotch between #3 and #4.

didn't they change the manafold to a 2 piece design in 99 or so? and everybody reporting cracks looks like they have a 98.

I have a 98. 5, no cracks (knock on wood) with 80K miles. Been meaning to re-torque the bolts I here people talk about falling out. Any body got the torque figures for the 98. 5 exhaust manafold to head bolts?

my 99 also cracked around 50,000. It was replaced under warranty, They even let me drill and tap the new manifold before they installed it.

I have always let the egts cool down before shut down 300 pre, sounds like the crack is in the same place on a lot of these. The way I noticed was black suet on the valve cover no hissing noise yet crack was about 2" long on #4 hear line, John Elway dodge fixed for free. .

Bomber_101, why did they refuse warranty coverage on your manifold? I thought everything on a Cummins had 100k, and it looks like others have gotten theirs warrantied.

loud ticking noise ???? i noticed this on a members RAM when we had it for trans upgrade , turbo spools up good and doesn't sound like it has a leak , but he did get it REAL hot , turned the paint on the turbo yellow ... #ad

Brought my truck in for the normal injector pump issue about Jan, 2001, and my local dealer advised me I had a crack in manifold. They did not say where. They automatically warranteed it from DC. I did not have a Pyro install, but don't let them screw you. All this with around 80k miles.

Good luck!
