price of IAT sensor

I was quoted $29. 04 for the IAT sensor when I ordered mine Monday. The parts man also told me it had a relatively new part number (upgrade to the initial design?... or vendor switch?)

Marco had asked me to provide updates on my mileage since I changed the IAT. After cruising up to Northeast Georgia for the 4th, on my return home my trip computer was showing a steady 21. 6 mpg (average of last 30 gallons used). My normal was 21. 4. The 21. 6 is a combination of Interstate (20%), 2 lane and day to day commute driving. I have noticed that even with the summer heat, my EGT at cruise is about 50*F cooler.

That may or not be related as much to the IAT as I would like to think because it has been raining here every day and I'm sure the humidity plays into the equation somehow. Also, I changed my lift pump last weekend and that may have provided some of the boost in mileage. It definitely provided a boost in performance. I do believe that the IAT is a contributor to the slight mileage increase.

BTW, my trucks computer is now very close displaying what I calculate. I normally just calculate on a mpg and don't try to do the last 30 gallons versus mileage. So in certain driving conditions, I'll get 22 plus based on gallons since last fillup (calculated). I'm curious now because I may approach 23 mpg in certain situations (60 mph on the two lanes).

Just found this thread. Just want to thank y'all for putting down all this great information!

Alright, Fueled up yesterday. Calculated 22. 4. 386 miles on 17. 2 gallons. Packed it in to make sure there was no air in the tank. Dang. Trip computer flashed on 21. 7 this morning but dropped back to 21. 6 when I got into the traffic lights. Mileage has improved.

Alan,

Sounds good!

You already had good mileage but the new IAT has improved it.

What I would like to see now, is one of those guys that don't get more than 15 MPG, change their IAT, and see what happens to ther mileage... .

Marco.

Part Number?

Anyone have a part number for this item, I am running about 15. 5 tp 16 mpg with a auto and 4. 10s. Will give this a try (can't get any worse) I hope. ;)

SCooke, the IAT sensor and MAP sensor have a lip you have to pry up to unlock then pull out the connector.

Part number?

Does anyone have the part number for this sensor? When I called my dealer to check his price, he had no idea what I was talking about. He did find a sensor and quote me a price of $22, but I'd like to verify he's looking at the right one.

Marco (and everybody else wondering results), Computer is showing 21. 9 this morning. It's catching up to my calculated mileage. I would have never believed my mileage could get any better but it has.

And the Part Number is: 05014197AA and the part is called Sensor, Temperature (SEN, TEM).

List was 20 and change and I got mine for 18. Have a nice day.

Marco,

Ronsram1999 here, I am the guy that was getting 8. 5 MPG towing in OD. I just got back from the Black hills in South Dakota and am happy to report I am now getting 10. 8 MPG towing and at speeds of 70-75 MPH. The mileage was computed by hand and is all towing, I kept the records different from towing and none towing. I have not calculated the non towing while on the trip because it was a lot of stop and go sight seeing. I think the MPG could have been a little better if I had not run into road construction 2 times and had to sit for a while idleing. Wind was never a factor, it was always calm to a slight breeze. My engine sounds happier running down the road and at idle is much quieter, Check engine light goes out right after bulb check and heater grid has never come on since I changed the IAT (the heater grid always came on even after driveing in 90 degree temps and I would shut down and restart). I know my mileage is not spetacular compared to some but I am happy for the improvement considering what I tow and haveing a to turn extra tires on a 3500 and 6 wheel drive and auto transmission. I will get some highway MPG non towing when I catch up on work and find some time.

Ron

Thanks one more time for the info.

Alan & Ron,

I'm glad to hear about your mileage improvement!

Alan get's a silghtly better MPG. Ron's is a HUGH + 2. 3 MPG!!! :D

Seems that what worked for the ADT gang, works for others also!

:)

Ron, having increased the mileage so much, how long will it take before the new IAT has payed for itself?

BTW. I'm also in the 2. 3-2. 5MPG improvement range.

Hello DC are you listening???

Marco

With mine it's about 9 or 10 fillups assuming full fill from scratch. That means I'm getting an extra 35 miles per tank (about 1 mpg). I'll take it.

I did not see, does anyone know the Dodge part numbers for these (for a 1999)?

I'm willing to give it a try - I'm only getting 13-14 MPG (as low as 10, never better than 16).

Saw this thread the other day and decided I should try it too. My ETH has around 16000 km on it-my mileage has dropped off the last 2000 or 3000 km to around 16 Canadian while operating. I got my brother to order me a new sensor and I slid it in Saturday morning. I won't go back to work until Thursday-but my 1st tank of fuel through on mixed highway and town driving came back at 20. 4 Canadian. I think I picked up 1-2 mpg anyways-we'll see what the week brings... .

I tightened all my intercooler clamps at the same time so my test may not be totally accurate. But I think the IAT sensor was responsible for the gains.

Question for Marco or someone?

What is the optumium (sp) air temperature for the CTD? There should be a temp. that is the best for performance and/or economy. I am assuming that the IAT provides the computer a resistance value based on the temperature. If the best is known, could the IAT sensor be set, or better yet, bypassed with a fixed resistor to 'fool' the computer into providing the best perf. and eco. ? Maybe a reostat to set on the fly? Just wondering or thinking outloud? Thanks

Ron

Rono,

There is no such optimum temperature. At least not the way you're thinking about it.

The combined IAT and MAP reading provide the ECM with the information what air VOLUME is entering the cylinders.

This information is needed because the ECM has to know how much fuel CAN be burned with that air volume. Things are a little similar to a gas engine. Too little fuel no performance, but too much fuel also harms the performance. If you overfuel the engine, all you get is smoke. Actually this hurts the performance and hurts mileage BIG time!
