Thanks Marco, I was looking at it differently. Great forum, lots of ideas and information from great and informed people.

I just tried to take mine out, my hands will not fit back there at all. Why do they always put senders in places that are impossible to get to??????? I am going to try lying on top of the engine later, maybe that will help.

Ok, i got the IAT out using a 13/16 socket, 2 skinned knuckles and a bad mood and it is sparkling clean!, what a waste of time. But i guess it is better to be safe then sorry. My truck has 17k miles. Anybody have a dirty one with that little mileage?

LOL I went out this morning and looked under the hood and it was Waaayyyyy back there and it looked very tight. So I closed my hood and came back inside.

A clean IAT does not mean that it is also within specs!

When I pulled my sensor it WAS clean but when I took it's readings it was out of specs.

I don't want to say here that all IAT sensors are bad. But since you get 'em out check their resistance values at several temperatures to be sure the sucker is working as it is supposed to!

Sky, It comes right out. I found the best way is knees on the bumper, left forearm on the valve cover, 3/8 drive with a 6 inch extension and it is outa there in a jiff.

Mine was dirty....

and that was with only 10000 miles on it! I have an E-brake-but it hasn't been on since new... .

Ok Ill give it a shot with 36k spose i should. It the one to the right of the map sensor at the very back correct?

So, for those of you that have replaced the IAT, did you purchase from the Dodge dealer or the Cummins shop for the best price? I know someone posted pn#'s somewhere in the past 4 pages.

If you've got a good dealer, might not even have to buy it if you're still in warranty. Went to my parts counter to buy sensor the other day to see if it would improve mileage. Service guy said it should fall under warranty, was it bad? I said I had read somewhere ;) that some were and that it was worth my $22 to try it out. He asked if I was going to insall it myself, said sure and he wrote it out on warranty.

Results: didn't seem to make any difference on my first tank but was sure worth the try. Old one was a little dirty allready with only 7500 miles, so will have to keep an eye on it in the future. As said before, keep up the good work guys, we all benefit!

Well (deep subject, I know), I finally got around to changing my IAT sensor on Monday. The OE IAT sensor didn't really look all that bad either. Although it's too early to tell if I have reaped any mileage gains, I haven't noticed any of the other advantages reported here by others. Maybe the use of a premium grade of Diesel fuel along with a quality Diesel fuel conditioner at EVERY fillup has someting to do with it.

Ya'll have been a huge help here on this site. Milage has gone from a consistent 17. 5 to 15. 2 mph calculated at the pump. Changed air fillter, ran a tank of fuel , no change. Saw this post on IAT , took it out, was real clean, with 68,000 on it. Cleaned it, ran a tank of fuel, back to 17. 5 mph. Love this post.

Silver 98. 5, auto, 2500 QC 3. 54, 285/75/16. LWB, ranch hand bumper w/grille guard , too many deer around here. ,boost, pyro and trans. guages. 5th wheel,

Curiosity got the best of me. Only 10k miles but thought I'd check. Clean, But seemed a little oily. Anyway the readings seemed off of what I read they should be. Gonna get it to the dealer as soon as work slows down. Probably out of warranty by then.

I'll try anything. The Beast weighs in at 10. 5k lbs. and milage is 10. 5:(

Any connection to EGR valve?

Does anyone with a DIRTY sensor have the EGR valve? This is about the only way I can think it would get really dirty. Is the only way to have the EGR valve is to have the California emissions package?

Just trying to figure it out. I have not pulled my IAT sensor yet to look at it, but I suspect the values are off a bit.

Gotta love the TDR!

We had an IAT cleaning session at our SoCal Meeting, Stefan was the wrench turner and I supplied the cleaning stuff, this is what we found.

We did 3 trucks, one with 23000 miles, one with 60000 miles and one with 45000 miles. My truck with 23000 miles the IAT looked clean we cleaned it anyways, Freds truck with Banks kit on it was verydirty and wet, cleaned it and the 60000 mile truck was very dirty but dry, cleaned it. I thought after the cleaning the IAT on my truck there would be no difference, there was , the motor pulled harder and a lot ran smoother under WOT. I be very happy. Fred and I drove back to SD and he said he really didn't notice a difference, oh well.

This is interesting, when Stefan did his truck the wire to the resistor was broken, you guys and gals need to check those very closely.

From the first day of owning my new truck I have been using fuel additive to every tank, is this the reason for the perfectly clean IAT sensor?????????????????????????

thanks for tip

Cummins part #

Has anyone found a Cummins part # for the sensor? I haven't had a chance to check my local dealer's price yet, but talk to Cummins regularly, and they were having a tough time finding the part #. Ray

Ray T. The Cummins number is 3408345. They want $34. 36. I got mine from Dardge for $18 US.

The reason they are having trouble is there are 3 or 4 air temp sensors on the engine. You have to tell them where it is so they get the right one.

BTW, Got my banjo bolts. Thanks.
