I purchased a FASS pump for my buddy in Vegas at May Madness for his 2000 3500. Well, after install he started to experience a hard start condition. There was a lot of talk on the board about fuel pressure above 15 psi causing this. My buddy, a TDR member, who will chime in soon I'm sure if I'm mislead in this, e-mailed the manufacturer, Diesel Performance Products at www.dieselpp.com and was brushed off and told to call the seller. What kind of customer service is this??? I thought this was a company was wanting to do a lot of business with us members. Not a good vote of support. Any thoughts?

I am the one that he bought the fass pump for and when I wanted a little help with the hard start problem that started after I put there pump on. I figured that they made the pump and they would want there customers to be happy with there product. when I got there e-mail back it was short and very blunt that they didn't want to help me. if any one else has had this problem please post to help make things a little better.

thank you in advance

Not really making me feel warm and fuzzy about doing buiness with them. I need a pusher pump and this has kinda stopped me from buying theirs.

I wouldnt think only 15psi would cause a hard start. I was running 15-20psi on my 01 ignition on and never had that problem. No leaks, not sucking air anywhere?

That is a pretty crappy response though.

Buy a BD auxiliary lift pump. No start problems and when the Cummings pump goes bad your fuel pressure gauge will tell you it's time to replace your original Cummins pump which costs $140

I got the same service for the same problem. I have a fairly new VP and my old pusher pump set up ran at 30psi. With this setup, I experienced no problems. I removed that setup and installed a FASS 150 and immediately had the hard start. I ended up using an oil pressure switch to fire the FASS. Works good, but is a band aid. The FASS dealer told me it was because of high pressure, but when I told him my old set up put out 30 psi, he ran out of ideas.

I had a hard start problem when I put my FASS on that got partially fixed by having a ECM reflash. After the reflash it was only hard to start after the truck sat overnight, a rusted fitting on top of the fuel module was causing an air leak that made it hard to start. When I talked to DPP they told me they didn't know what was causing the problem and If I found a solution let them know. The other problem I had with them was that shortly after I got my FASS I ordered up four replacement filters from them, two fuel filters and two water separators. What I got from them was four water separators and no fuel filters. I ordered up two fuel filters from another source and kept one of each in the truck for a spare. When I had my Vp-44 changed out I went to change out the filters on the FASS and the water separators they had sent me didn't even fit the FASS  I sent them back to DPP three weeks ago and I still haven't gotten the right ones from them.

It is love and hate with them. I have had no problems with the fass Pump only, but i have 95gph. might make a diff.

I also have the 95 gph. i think they should already have a solution. thats what I would do if I had a product on the market that was having problems.

you mean solution? The hard start is only showing up when the truck has been driven and is hot. After sitting all night I believe the truck starts fine. I would think this fact eliminates leaks and air in system.

One more thing - Talked with Mark Chapple at TST today, the dealer I purchased DieselDude's pump from. What an awesome guy! Answered all my questions, wasn't bothered by them, and genuenly wanted to help. Now thats what I'm talkin' about!

As for the hard start, TST acknowledges the 15 psi problem, but instead of droping the pressure on the pump they either (A) rotate the key to run and allow the pump to cycle on then off before cranking or in exream cases (B) install a toggle switch in the harness for the pump so you start with the pump off and then turn on the pump with the truck running. Giver a try and tell us what happens!

I don't know if its just my truck, but my FASS cycles and shuts off before my wait to start light even goes out. Also I have not had a single issue with hard starts for over a year now since I put it in.

I have the hard start problem ONLY when the engine is hot. I may try the toggle switch trick. I alaready have too many switches in the cab as it is... . oh what's one more!

Question ??? Are the individuals that are experiencing the hard start problems noticing this with an almost empty tank  The reason I ask this, is that I have a FASS system also and have 100,000 plus on it. The only time I experience a hard start problem is when my tank is almost empty with the nose of my truck pointed up hill in my drive way. If the tank is almost empty and the nose of the truck is down hill, there is no problem.

This might be off the subject for your individual circumstances but one never know, there might be something. In my case what I have determined is that with the truck pointed up hill with an almost empty tank, I get a drain down from the over pressure return line on the VP. In theory the return line drains down and allows a bubble of air to creep into the VP. With the nose pointed down hill, since air rises and fuel settles, this drain down of the over pressure return does not happen.

Would this scenario fit any of your problem with hard start?? If yes then you might want to check the over pressure return check valve for proper seating.

I am a fass dealer and have to say that this happened recently to one of my customers and I had to figure it out on my own also, so don't feel alone. DPP unfortunately relies on its dealer too much for their tech and troubleshooting sometimes.

I found that on this particular truck that the fass system was actually not always running and then when shut off hot would not restart due to a lack of prime. The cause is heat was building resistance in the output circuit for the lift pump in the ecm. this is where the fass gets its trigger to turn on when you need it. I now wire the trigger to fuse number 9 in the fuse box which is ecm power. now when the ecm has power the fass is always running. This fixed the hard start when hot. ALso there is no problem with it running and the motor not, because it has an internal bypass valve.

also there have been a few instances of this happening to the point that even when cold there is not enough current flow to hold the relay in. .

thats most of what I know there are a few more tricks that I can share if you want to call feel free to any time 317 401 4843 for Fass help.

Hard start

Just to let you know I had the hard start when hot problem for a while after I put the FASS in. First thing I did was have the ECM reflashed so that the pusher pump doesn't start until the engine is runnning and not as soon as you turn on the key. In addition to being hard to start when hot it started to stall when I put it in gear, this was only after it was warmed up, cold it was fine. I tried reseting the APPS and even put a new APPS in it and that didn't help. The only thing that fixed my problem was a new VP-44.

thanks chris every one I talked to told me the same thing thats why I put the hotrod vp from industrial injections on last weekthe truck itself is running way better but the hard start is still present.
