Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) starting problem

Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Lost injection pump?

I had a FASS HPFP installed by John Isaacs at Floor-It Diesel Performance last October. Everything is great. My fuel pressure is 18 - 20 at idle at no less than 13. 5 at WOT. I believe it is the 150 gph model.

Up until last week, the HPFP made a humming or whistling noise that I considered normal. I could barely hear it over the engine or beside the truck. The strange noise started last weekend after I changed fuel filters. :{

The HPFP has a NAPA 3270 fuel filter installed between the fuel tank an the pump. I have verified that the filter is installed correctly. I changed both this filter and the standard filter in the engine compartment this past weekend. The only other thing I did was to tie off the fuel line as I felt it hung maybe a little low to the ground. After I heard the noise, I remove the cable tie and let the fuel line hang as it was originally. The noise remained.

The noise went from a whistle as described above to a loud noise that is very obvious outside the truck, especially in the bed above the fuel pump. The noise now definitely sounds like an electric motor. I am not sure how else to describe it so I made a recording of the noise on my mobile phone then converted it to a wav file for your listening pleasure (6 seconds in length).

Because wav files are not of the permitted file types, I changed the extension to txt. You will need to download the file and change the extension to wav then you will be able to listen to the noise on your preferred media player. I hope I don't get in trouble for changing the extension, but I don't have a Web site where I can store the file and found it hard to believe that a wav file wasn't an approved upload type.

Does anyone know what happened and it the noise will eventually be harmful to either the pump itself or my truck. Fuel pressure is unchanged before and after this new noise.

The truck is a 2001 with 6 speed. I have an Edge Comp set on 5x4, AFE Stage 2 and MagnaFlow 4 inch exhaust. No other mods, other than the usual gauges, have been done to the engine.

Thanks in advance.

Dan, Thanks for the response. I purchased everything I need today to perform the recommended test. I will try it this weekend and let you know. Thanks.

Dan,
I finally was able to perform the bucket test. (Between rain, snow, cold temps and work... ) I had 4 gallons of #2 diesel in a fuel can. I ran a 3/8 fuel line up to the in-line filter to the pump and started the engine. Initially the pump made the same sounds as prior. However, after a couple of minutes the fuel pressure began to flucuate between 18 and 20 psi. As the pressure went down to 18, the pitch the pump made decreased slightly, but obviously. After a few minutes of this, the pressure steadied up at about 19 - 19. 5. Eight minutes into my test, the engine died. I checked my bucket and only a half gallon was left in the can. I put everything back together and ran the engine from idle up to 2700 rpm. Pressure dropped to 15 (normal at that rpm for my truck). However, the original hissing noise (from before the bucket test) remained.

I will call John and set up and appointment for my truck. Thanks again for your help.
