Was that grey ghost - coast to coast?

I met Brakeman Bill sometime around 1964 at the Thurston County Fair. As I was walking through the parking lot I saw a person trying to unload a bunch of stuff, easel and other stage type stuff, from their car. He was grumbling under his breath as the stuff was much bigger than he was. So, the boy scout and 4Her in me offered assistance. I did not initially recognize him as he only came up to mid chest on me, and he was not wearing his Brakeman Bill hat and coveralls. Of course I got to be the pac mule and carry the BIG tall things. As we were walking across the fairgrounds we began talking about stuff in general. He was walking behind me and said something; it was then I recognized his voice. I was expecting some tall person as he looked so tall on TV. When we got to his space I helped him set up and got to "pet" and talk to Crazy Donkey. Got a thank you autograph from him. We had a good time until it was time for me to go show the steer and he had to entertain the fans. He was one of the great ones, too. A lot of respect for him and JP.

Growing up outside of Detroit, we could pick up the CBC from Windsor, Ontario. When I was very young, along with Captain Kangaroo, I liked a show called The Friendly Giant.
