IMHO, the worthless media of America has blown this way out of proportion like they always do.......It will be interesting to see what the real story is, once the dust settles.

The tie rods end and ball joints I thought were the main problems when I read the article. And there was earlier info that stated the recall went back to the 03's. Maybe the 03 owners up to the 08 owners didn't stir up enough dust to get the recall. With all the hype on the death wobble on the 2nd gen's there was never any talk about replacement of components.
What about the DEAD PEDDLE on the newer ones? This should be a high concern for the NHTSA to look into.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXX2 I'm so fed up with the trash on the web and media I have cut my viewing down occasional use, and My life is 150% happier.

Here's a quote I made at another forum.

WOW ,typical Gov , how many years ago was the Gov begging for someone to come and rescue Chrysler, Now the same Gov wants to fine them into Bankruptcy...My question is why does any company want to do business in America...Maybe Fiat will walk and the Gov can buy the leftovers, O ALL off us be so much better off with the Gov in control. Let's just penalize every company into submission against there owners interests. Poor responds, if the Gov takes years to punish convicted criminal's? now they want to fine a company that's taking months to acquire the resources to recall millions of vehicles, Sound
hypocritical to Me

Really doesn't matter what the truth is. Once the dust settles, and every knee has been jerked, all people will remember is "Fiat/Chrysler to buy back 500,000 Ram pickups"

The media and the big three networks have deteriorated so badly that I now watch Public Broadcasting a good 80% of the time. There is actually some pretty good stuff on there.

The most frustrating thing to me is when the entire truth regarding any of the recent blown right out of proportion events comes to light there is no one reporting on that...sickening....journalism at it's very worst.

Do the real truth on the pool party debacle sometime, it's pretty interesting. You will have to search it because the media has moved on.

They buy back is an interesting option that i don't see how Fiat Chrysler loses that much: For the bought back trucks, they can re-sell them after they are repaired. Then, how many people will use the buy back $$$ to take a new truck home. FC and the dealers move new trucks, banks get more financing dollars...it is a win win for them except for the civil fine.

Here are some other important things to consider:

What if the owner chooses to ignore the recall/repair or buy back...will the insurance company cover you in an accident in a un-repaired truck?
Why the buy back option if they can be successfully repaired and re-sold? (makes no sense to offer a buy back, why not just move forward with the recall?)

I like my truck, i have it customized the way i like it...so do i repair(see above questions) or do the buy back?

Great question. Has there ever been a buy back of this scale to compare it to?

Glad I don't have to make these decisions and wonder if my insurance will cover me.

Mine's not listed.

My early info 1500s will be to cover the mega cabs not the true 1/2 tons. Trading your truck in will be simpler than any buy back and few of the covered years will meet all the criteria

There seems to be a discrepancy on the recall numbers, but best I can tell it is for some 1500 trucks with 9.25 rear axle nut failures, and some HD 4x4 trucks with an outer ball joint recall. The buyback appears to be driven by the low numbers of customers that had the recall completed.
If the recall was done, no repurchase offered. Recall not done, you can have it done or opt for the repurchase. The repurchase says allowance for reasonable depreciation but does not specify what reasonable is. Most likely they will go with an average amount allowed by the various lemon laws definitions that are based on 120,000 useful life. So if you paid $40k and have 60,000 miles they would pay 50% ($20k) of what your purchase price was. Based on what used trucks are going for, especially diesel equipped it may be better to get the recall done.

I guess that I will keep my truck as it might become a collector vehicle; since some of the 4X4's could be bought back. My truck which is an 2008 but built in Sept 07 and sold new in Nov 07 to me; has the older style steering linkage on this truck. Similar to the non-recalled years of trucks built. I went in for the inspection and the dealer said my truck did not meet the criteria for the recall on the steering linkage.

A couple of months later the RH passenger side tie rod joint failed; going over a set of railroad tracks at a slow speed. I did send a letter to both FCA corporation and the NHTSA about the failure and my concerned over this failure. Thank-you very much and there is the door attitude from FCA was the response. So I do not think I will see anything from FCA about this recall on the truck now. The steering linkage was rebuilt using all MOOG grease able components, I had 81K miles on the original steering components when this failure occurred.

I am now waiting on the driver side Air bag recall fix. I have the recall notice telling me to wait since they do not have the parts to fix my truck and a notice will be sent when they are available.

Jim

I don't know of anyone who has had the Air Bag recall done around here. Maybe there has been a few, but I think there are quite a number of us that received the notice that they were waiting on parts.

Later, the agency said that only the owners of vehicles under three specific recalls that have not yet had their vehicle fixed are eligible. Fiat Chrysler says that number is less than 200,000.
