Simple Differential Cover Gasket question

After someone I know had thier 2006 F-350 Diesel go up in flames last month and last year a friend had a electrical fire in the front of his camper. I'm thinking I'd like to carry a fier extinguisher in my truck.

Wondering who else carries one and where do you carry it. I was going to see if there were room to mount it next to the drivers seat on the floor, kind of under that flap that hangs down .

Any suggestions?

Nick

They make little fire extingishers that are about the size of the big aerosol freon cans. I don't see why a man couldn't put a couple of strips of the extra sticky backed velcro under there and velcro it (or a couple) in place. Just be sure if you use the velcro to vacuum the carpet real good first so it sticks good.

I carry mine under the rear seat, driver side in the storage well, easy to get to . you can get a pretty good size one at Costco. good at home and in the rv as well.

Also remember that if you are dealing with an engine compartment fire, do NOT totally open the hood to use the extinguisher... . only pop the release and insert the extinguisher in the gap to use it... opening the hood introduces WAY for airflow and can easily enalarge the fire, depending what us burning.

You should also make sure that it is an AB (at least) or ABC rated extinguisher. I think that most are anyway, but definitely check the label before you buy it.

I have 2 Kiddie ABC's and they are locate in my utility bed side storage compartment drivers side. Easy to get to.

Don't know the model number but they measure ~4-1/2" width and stand ~ 16" tall and have a hose attached.
I have a couple times come to the assistance of others out on the open road and both times they did the job of putting out the engine fire in the cars. Note, I said cars. . not trucks.
You can't expect those little bottle jobbers to do a fast and complete knock down in my personal opinion.

Speaking from past experience 45 years ago when I was in a sedan and the fuel pump implode and sent fuel onto the hot exhaust, at 1:30AM, 75 miles east of Reno, Nevada on I-80 in the desert, putting the engine fire out with your hands scooping up dirt from the road side is not fun.

No one hurt. All turned out well later.

Moral of the story. BIGGER IS BETTER!!!

Cheers, Tom

Good discussion here.

I have a fire extinguisher on my transfer tank in the back of the truck, but I had to tie wrap it on to the mount so the vibration wouldn't drop it to the bed. This thread made me think it might be better to put one in the cab that is more grab and go. (My back seat platform is nearly always covered with tools etc, so that underneath storage compartment is pretty inaccessible in an emergency. )

Was thinking of getting one or two of the mini Kidde or First Alert auto extinguishers and putting them in the center console. Unfortunately, half the reviews on Amazon, say those things are prone to discharge just in shipping. Anyone have experience that contradicts that?

I was on my way home from work and on the shoulder of the road was a desperate man watching his truck burn up. Thats when I bought a F/E for my truck and the wifes ride as well

You mean like this?

Plus one under rear seat, plus a couple in the camper. I'll also carry a larger one if I'm attending a race or other event.

Go to your local pull-a-part and take a look around for burned out trucks. 90% of the ones in the two yards I used to frequent were all Powerstrokes.

Not that you can't have a problem with a Cummins...

IMHO if my truck catches on fire, I've got good insurance and I think I'd rather it just burn to the ground.

Having said that, I carry a 5 lb bottle of Halon on my back seat, and another 5 lb bottle of ABC dry chem on the passenger's side.

I have a small halon in the cab and a 5 lb dry chem in my toolbox. If you have to use one on somebody else's rig, they are typically glad to pay the replace/recharge costs.

I carry...

I carry two 5 pound ABC extinguishers in the bed of my truck. One on each side. I carry them there so that if there's a fire in the cab, I don't have to dig under the seat for one. Make sure and take em out once or twice a month and give em a good shake so the powder doesn't pack down.

Wow. I guess you haven't invested much of yourself into your truck. I also assume you stay on well traveled roads. I have my second home on the back of my truck not to mention all the various mods I"ve done that I'd hate to do over again. Plus, with the places I travel to it'd be pretty inconvenient to walk out of.

A DOT trooper recently was invited to talk to out antique tractor club in an effort to assure we are all safe and legal. An interesting point he made regarding extinguishers was they had to be secured to be legal and safe,as they are a pressurized vessel. I hope all those " under the seat" are properly secured. Be Safe.

I carry one under my drivers seat. Oops, its not secured, but doesn't seem to move too much. Maybe loose keeps it mixed up?

Grabbed it as I got out of the Truck when I lost a Trailer Tire. Fortunately all the "smoke" I saw in my rearview mirror must have just been dust/dirt from the flapping delaminated trailer tire.

An RV Blogger I follow lost their Mobile Suite fancy fiver to a tire fire... fortunately they got unhooked before it took the truck too.
