Here are my impressions since delivery Tuesday morning, in no particular order:

* Brakes: This truck STOPS. No drama, no pull, no vibrations, no fade. Just a smooth controlled stop every time.

* I like the new programming on the 48RE. Yes, the OD lockout is gone, but Tow/Haul mode works very well holding off upshifts and doesn't allow excess lugging either.

* Everything you've heard about the reduced noise is true. This engine isn't a whole lot louder than my dad's old 93 Thunderbird 5. 0 V8. Dramatically quieter than the 12-valve.

* The cold starting is also much improved. Wednesday morning, the temps had dropped to 12 degrees after being in the upper 40s early Tuesday (and damn near 70 on Monday). The 12-valve would have required at least 2 cycles of the grid and some throttle to get going, pumping some smoke in the process. I cycled the grid on the 05, then on the second cycle, the Wait light disappeared immediately. Engine fired smooth and clean... no smoke, no stumble.

* It's going to take me some time getting used to the smaller front door of the new Quad. For those who haven't climbed in one, the B-pillar is alongside the seat instead of slightly behind it, and at least once a day, I'll bump my knee on the dash getting in because I don't have the same door opening I was used to on the 96. This will pass soon, I'm sure.

* The factory horn is LOUD. Good for traffic and emergency, but bad for quiet neighborhoods like my home, thus my immediate dismissal of the light flash and horn chirp with the remote locks.

* Bumps and potholes that threatened to induce Death Wobble on the 96 are soaked up very well by the 05. There are still some that I need to slow down for (for my own comfort), but the suspension is far less skittish.

* The 6-inch increase in wheelbase hasn't done much in terms of making the turning diameter much larger, but the new faster steering ratio makes tight spots a dream. Steering is incredibly linear.

* The 96 had that vinyl-wrapped radio antenna, while the 05 is just the metal. Know what? The reception is MUCH better on the 05. Out where I live, there's a lot of AM-signal interference thanks to the remote fire signals and other such towers. The 96 would lose most AM stations 2 blocks from home with a hard buzz. No such problem with the 05.

* The trailer-tow mirrors are rock-solid. The mirrors on the 96 would vibrate occasionally at highway speed, and moreso with high wind. The 05 mirrors only move if the door does. The power adjustment has an off position (thank you!) - the joystick of the 96 could accidentally be bumped and would adjust whichever mirror it was aimed at.

* Why three different levels of window tint? The windshield and front door glass are standard tint (that faint green). The rear slider is medium gray. The rear doors are dark gray. It's an issue to me because I work noon to 8pm - the only time it's still light out when I go home is late June. The varied tints make over the shoulder glances less confident, and I am relying more on the passenger-side mirror.

* Forward visibility is better, although the A-pillar is only slightly better than the 96. The windshield is higher up and the blue tint strip is gone, making those close-up traffic lights much easier to see.

* While not the best I've ever experienced, the headlights are better than the 96. The throw is a lot more even on the road ahead - the 96 sent two "hot spots" ahead.

* The power increase (180/420 to 325/610, 80% and 45% respectively) combined with the more willing 48RE shift programming make on-ramps and passing a no-sweat proposition. When I floor the go pedal, the Holset spools up, the trans finds the right gear, and the truck just accelerates hard. The 96 legitimately required planning when confronted with a "hit it or wait" decision.

* The reverse lights on 2nd Gen trucks had that smoked lens, while 3rd Gens have the larger clear lens. What a difference backing up in the dark - even over the dually fenders, I can actually see that what's behind me at night *is* illuminated.

* Driver's seat is very comfortable. I have the premium cloth with 6-way power, and even though I have long legs for my height (6'0" with 34" inseam), I don't have any issues with too short of a cushion for thigh support. The seatback hits me in the right spots and the head restraint is positioned very well for me without having to raise it too high.

* Heating and defrosting are quick and thorough. The windshield and mirrors reduce any snow/ice coating to liquid in just a couple of minutes. The darker windows will certainly help the AC when I need it.

* I appreciate the fact that the marker lights are all standard bulbs now. On the 96, the dually fender and tailgate clearance lights were all these sealed unbits that were $20 each at the dealer, or you could get knockoffs from NAPA for under $10. On the 05, every clearance/marker light (5 roof, 4 dually fender, 3 tailgate) are all the same #168 bulb.

* The General AmeriTrac tires are doing well on wet roads and in soft snow (it has snowed twice since Tuesday!!), and feel as stable as the Michelins I had on the 96. Time will tell as the Generals wear down, of course.

* I like all the storage areas... the business console, the storage area under the center seat cushion, and the cubbies under the steel load floor. I have plenty of room for tools and junk without having to also carry some sort of box or bag in the back seat.

My side steps are in (Mopar black powdercoat tube steps), so those will be installed Monday morning. Should be sunny the first few days of next week, so that will allow me to take some decent pics for the Readers Rigs gallery. For those who haven't seen it in person, Patriot Blue changes shades depending on the light. In sunshine, the paint is bright blue with a metallic-style depth... when cloudy, it's dark blue.

Needless to say, I am really happy with the truck!

What is 48RE? I keep seeing it all the time. I agree with everything except headlights. My 05 headlights suck. The headlights on my 95 Dodge/Cummins dually were not much better. Can anyone recommend a good legal driving lights that I can mount on my Luverne SS Push Bar/Grill Guard. I also have a 05 , 3500 dually, 4x4, Laramie H, 325/610 HO

Congrats on the new truck. I am in total agreement with everting you indicated. My old one was also a 96, only apparent difference was in tansmission selection and 3500 vs 2500.

moving up from 96 to 05

Nice job. I totally agree with all your evaluations.

We just traded our 96 in on a 05 3500. :D

We were pulling our 5er heading for Florida when the engine blew (major internal damage) near Ashland VA. :{

The local Dodge dealer Pence gave us a good number on trade even with a mystery engine.

The wife loves the new quiet engine. Part of me misses the noise & smoke but it was time to move up anyway.

Today I went to the local Dodge dealer & bought some OEM goodies. Side step rails, chrome bug deflector & some other stainless trim pcs.

I promised my wife I would leave this truck stock.

The aFe stage 2 and Edge Juice will be installed next week.

and than thats it, I promise.

baccagab, the 48re is the model number for the automatic transmision. one thing you can do is get a couple brite boxes from geno's. it keeps your low beams and i think fog lights on when turn on your high beams. you need two for the 05's.

The 48RE is the upgraded 4 speed automatic that was first introduced midway through the 2003 model year. For the 2005 models, the OD lockout was replaced with a genuine Tow/Haul mode that changes the shift points based on speed, load, and throttle position.

Glad you like it. I went from a '95 to a '99 to my current '04. World's of difference in the 3rd Gen... . I think all good. Here's to hoping it just gets better for you!

KC,

Aint it the truth!. In my '98 it was all about the momentum. Get it and keep it. Made ramps challenging but fun. I almost miss it.

The power of the 04. 5 is incredible. I love it.

I see you apparently didn't get the factory installed vibration at 70 MPH? Good for you. I forgot to hit the delete button on the order form for mine. Maybe I should put it in the classifieds?

Best of luck with yours. I love mine

Steve

Oh yeah, good choice on color. I find all the cool people choose it!

Was: 98 12v QC 170,000 miles

Is: 04. 5 "600". ALL the toys. Patriot blue over silver.

Yup, no vibes, no weird hums... just a happy Holset whistle.

Thanks for all that info. How am I ever going to continue driving my old 2nd gen'er ?

I thought this was the best:

I know what you mean ! At 11K gross, my 12V is underpowered, but, I'll wait for the 400/800 CTD version before I make the upgrade :-laf

When I get on I-80 by my home for the drive to work, I have a relatively short acceleration lane to work with - I have to get to speed pretty quick if semis/dumps are approaching and they don't have room to move left. With the 96, there were times I'd actually have to come almost to a stop and wait it out. No such problem with the 05, and that's without engaging Tow/Haul. Also helping is the wider rev band of the 610 - the 12-valve choked off at about 2600, which meant the 47RE was almost never going to downshift from 4 to 2. If I floor the 05 at highway speed (say some slow car/truck slows me down to 45-50 mph), the 48RE drops to second and approaches 3100 rpm, then 3rd for the pass, then back to 4th once I back off the throttle.

I'm basically driving the same way I did before, but it is SO nice to know that I have the horses to use passing lanes any time I want, even uphill.

Admittedly, my '02 is slightly modded, and perhaps I'm a bit predjudiced - but truth is, I have NO concerns in freeway onramps, or passing on upgrades empty, or when towing our 5er. I dunno if the related enthusiasm in the above posts are because they mostly compare older (than mine!) trucks, or perhaps older totally stock trucks - but as far as *I* am concerned, the thrust in the seat of my pants in passing manuevers feels much the same as I enjoyed with my vette and '98 Camaro SS... And no, I don't find myself planning a day ahead to make a pass, or counting to a thousand waiting for the turbo to spool, either! ;) :D :-laf

Golly, maybe there's something WRONG with my truck... :-laf :-laf

BUT, enjoy the new hardware (and payments!) - and be happy! Oo. Oo.

I don't have any low power problem here, either. A transmission I can't slip, is great too. :D

Where on earth are you paying $10+ for the dually box and tailgate lights? :O  I can get them for less than $4/ea. Petersen or Truck-lite brand. What a rip off.

having both my 05 and 01 I hsve to agree the 05 is no comparison to the 01 in comfort and drivability but I tell ya with the mods on the 01 I sure miss the power... I have not driven the 01 for a month or so went to drive it today and proceeded to make a rather large cloud of smoke and 2 very impressive burn out lines out of the drivway (oops the throttle is a little more sensitive on the 01 :--)

My 05 is doing great!

The mileage is better than I thought it would be. After reading all the negative posts about mileage on the 600's I was relieved to get 19. 6 mpg (Calculated) on the first tank on my 68 mile commute. The next tank I drove a little more aggresive on the second tank and netted 18. 9. These mileage numbers are pretty good for a new tight engine and on winter fuel. Also my drive consists of about 15% city and the rest is highway with speeds varying form 60 to 70 mph.

Here is a pic of my 05.

Who's running boards do you have? they look great and are what my wife and I have been looking for! Beautiful truck by the way.

Congrats! Love my '05 also. No complaints except for the poor quality sound from the "premium" Infinity sound system. Everything else is great and NO comparison to the old 12V.
