I just wanted to offer another alternative for a muffler swap that brings out that Cummins growl!

Last Wednesday I had the local exhaust swap replace the stock muffler with a 4" in/out Flo-Pro straight through muffler. I decided against going for the full 4" pipe system since the stock exhaust pipe was 4"already from the muffler and in pretty good condition and I was keeping my truck at stock power levels.

It sounds great especially without the silencer ring! I think the exhaust shop owner was more excited than I was when done when he said something like, "Yeahhh... now that's the sound of a healthy Cummins diesel!" With the 6-speed and putzing around town you can hear the deep sound with the turbo whistle between shifts, taking off, or slowing down. When you get on the go pedal- it sounds like a straight piped 12-valve  Normal interstate cruising at 75 mph is a bit louder than stock, but you can still hear the wind noise and stereo without noticably having to turn the volume up.

As far as performance goes I also noticed it revs up a bit quicker. No idea as to EGT since I don't have gauges yet. I'll have a 80% highway mileage figure tomorrow when I fill up again. Also, at an intersection this morning, I caught a ford diesel owner waiting across from me quickly roll down his window and lean out to look back at me when I took off!

I also need to get an exhaust tip as the Flo-pro replaced the stock offset muffler and moved the tailpipe exit a couple inches in (no increase observed in cab diesel exhaust smell though). Any recommendations for a tip that will not change the sound as is?

The best I can describe the sound is like this already good sounding Magnaflow sound clip recently posted on the DTR website, but slightly deeper:

Sweet!!! I'm lovin' my 4" Banks without the muff and an Aeroturbine just behind the downpipe. Barks a little through the gears between 1300-1600 but sounds good and settles right down on the highway. Gotta love it.

Jstieger, how much for the muffler install? thanks, Doc

Doc,

Total cost was $186. 40 ($129. 95 muffler, $48 labor, $8. 45 tax)

Excluding the tip (which I didn't get) the cost was comparable to what others mentioned on this site for a muffler swap only. The guy that installed it for me runs a small custom exhaust performance shop that comes well recommended around here so I didn't have any heartburn with paying the labor.

Originally I asked him for a magnaflow, but he didn't carry them (except for the street racer "Fast and Furious" type cars).

Hope this helps!

JStieger, I got to looking for a Flo-pro and came to find that there are quite a few different sizes out there and am wandering what size yours is. How long is it, what is the diameter, etc? Thanks in advance.

muffler size

Hawkeye 04,

I just measured the muffler and it's:

-4" inlet / outlet, straight through

-24" long

-8" diameter

I don't have a part number on my receipt, but according to their website www.flopro.com it looks like the part number is #6192

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the fast response! That will help. I think I'm going to start shopping for one based on your recommendation. :) I need a little more NOISE!!!:D
