Cummins 8.3 questions

Bought the Sprinter !!!

My cabinet company delivered a load the other day, they have a couple of new looking big panel trucks and the sound of the engine was so familiar I had to lean the hood forward (they're the big rig type hoods on these) to take a look. Sure enough there was a Cummins B. 5. 9 24 valve, I told the guys that that engine was the same one in my Dodge pickup, none of them believed me...

Why does ford put the 5. 9 in the big trucks and not their pickups?

Gifford, I am so proud of you for being a true gearhead :) I can see you out there with the hood lifted on the furnature truck looking at the all mighty CUMMINS. :-laf :-laf :-laf

The Cummins is rated as a light/medium duty and the flowersmoke is only light so furd can only offer the poke up to the f-450 I believe, maybe its the f-550 after that the options are the Cummins and I think they do a Cat too but not sure?

Cheers, Kevin

The F700 is a component truck with more than 1 engine brand option, 3126B Cat also available. Ford has used the B Cummins in their chassis since the Brazilian 6 cylinder was a flop, this engine is a proven drop in performer. Drove one in a school bus chassis and it would out pull a DT466 and fuel milage was higher too. PK

The smallest ford you can get a Cummins in is a F-650. But they come with some great transmission options! Allisons, 5 & 6 speed Fullers, and 7 speed Spicers. The ford med. duty site mentions a 10 speed Fuller too but my local ford dealership's shop manuals didn't show it?

Do you think we can put the Fullers or Spicers in our RAM's?

I was thinking about this last night. DC has Cummins sewed up until '07 for pickups. But why has Ford not done something about slipping a little Cat in the 450 or 550s???

Bob Martin, who is the Fleet man down the street at Mike Brown Dodge,(I signed him up as a TDR member) was in my office yesterday afternoon. We were plotting and schemming about ordering an F650 Crew Cab Low Pro with a 300 Cummins and an Allison in the XLT Version. Then take a new take off dually bed and install it on the frame. It would look like a pick-up on STERIODS! He has got Mike talked into it.

Will keep you posted... ... ... ... ... .

Our bus has a 12 valve. It is a 66 passenger bus w/ wheelchair lift. Mom says the other busses can't keep up with her! It's only rated at 210HP, and I think it's getting around 9mpg. (remember thats in town with a lot of stop and go)

The F450 still only has a Dana 80. What does the F550 have? I've been trying to think of a real crewcab with a strong enough diff and repower it with a 3126 or 8. 3. I'd also like to stay with 19. 5 tires. Craig

I've heard of 8. 3s in Superduties. Is the cat longer? Maybe an IHC cab then. I saw a new GMC 6500 crewcab a few years ago. 275 hp 3126, 6 sp man. , 19. 5s air everything with a custom hauler bed - cheap. They're not very good looking cabs - I guess that's why it was $45k. I want it to be more pickup sized - maybe impossible with a 3126 or 8. 3. Craig

C Schomer - The F-450's come with Dana 80's and the F-550's come with Dana 135's. The 80 is still a integral housing and the 135 is a banjo style with a removeable center section. The F-650 on up come with a really big axle assy.

For a while the F-650 could be had in the lowest GVWR trucks with a lower output Powerstroke( they had to lower the output to make it live in a truck with that kind of service factor ) , but most were the CTD. The F-750 ( to the best of my memory ) is CTD or Cat only and CAT being the highest weight rating engine choice. It's nice to know that the ISB is at home in a REAL work truck- the PS is a nice engine , it just does not belong in all of the medium duty applications -- but the Cat is at home in the heaviest of medium duty trucks.

The F450 or 550 would be a perfect conversion. IF, and I say IF, you could find one that was a manual trans. with a blown-up PS(that part should not be hard) then I think you would have a perfect canidate for a neat conversion.

HO with a 6 speed

Change rear end ratio(Ford installs like a 4:88)

I think it would make a great rig for what I do... ...

Barry, I'm thinking the same thing only with a cat or 8. 3 if possible. F550 min. w/135 diff. . Is the F550 still the pickup cab and fenders? Has anyone seen an 8. 3 in a Superduty shell or is that another rumor? The Spicer 7sp has a 1 3/4" input spline - clutch and maybe bell would be a problem for a 5. 9. It normally uses a 14" clutch. It uses 1480 - 1710 U-joints. 1st and rev. aren't syncroed. 1st is 7. 48, 2nd is 4. 43, 3rd is 2. 76, 4th is1. 90, 5th is 1. 34, 6th is 1. 00 and 7th is . 74. OD is rated 660 tq. - don't know what the other gears are rated. It weighs about 450 lbs. Craig

I've seen at least 1 Ford 550 tow truck with the Cummins B5. 9 - perhaps about a '97 or so - but according to info in threads like this, it might have been an engine swap...

It annoys, my Ford-lovin, Dodge hating RV buddy no end, that REAL Ford trucks use the same Cummins engine as my '02 Dodge 2500...

SO, would I rub it in?

YOU BETCHA! ;) :D :D

My grandpa and my uncle got a F-550 for their roofing company and if I remember correctly it has a CAT. All their other trucks are Dodge Ram CTD's 2- 3500's 2-2500's I guess you could count mine too, since I work for em.

Carolina... ... ... ... would you double check that F550? If it came from the factory with a Cat, I would sure like to know about it. Thanx... ... ... ... ...

We have F*rd F-650s at work with 5. 9s and 8. 3s in them. Backed by Allisons. The ones with 5. 9 have juice brakes and the 8. 3s have air.
