So I dropped the oil pan on my 48re transmission attempting to diagnose why the transmission quit going forward or back and found a short hollow bolt laying on top of the valve body. The bolt is only about 1/2" long of threads maybe and is hollowed out. Has a wide flat head approximately 3/4" hex head. Any ideas where this cake from? Haven't dropped the valve body yet but planning to tomorrow. Oil smells burnt as well :(

yeah I've come across that site already and studied all 181 pages and also found nothing. thinking maybe my torque converter went but that still doesnt explain the bolt/ plug

I would guess it either plugs a galley or holds a spring and ball/valve in a galley. Where it goes, I don't know.

That makes a lot of sense to me, but I don't know much about the innards of modern transmissions. If that's what it is, Kbcattle13 should be worried because he would still have a little steel ball and a spring to find in there.
