Front and rear differential covers and fluid recommendations

You are the first guy I ever had a chance to converse with who can tell how fast a visible leak is leaking.

Once I thought I had a "slow leak" in a manual transmission Hyundai Excel. But accidentally let it run dry and failed on me

My sight glass is peace of mind.

If you can’t tell a slow axle or pion weep( oily dust at the seal ) from an actual leak( oil on the wheel or ground) maybe you shouldn’t be advising others. I am surprised that so many who are adamant about no oil quick drain because of the possibility of damage from off-roading are happy to have a glass door in the diff cover.

Actually, my neighbor had a hole ripped in his oil pan by road debris. He had a little 4 banger car. Probably something fell off a truck and he couldn't avoid it without causing an accident.

The oil drain plug is at the bottom of the oil pan. The sight glass is closer to the top. The quick drain valve protrudes, the sight glass is slightly recessed. Oil turns to dust? It's in the ground for millions of years and never dries out. It may trap dust. Never seen it turn to dust.

Your ignorance is showing. Obviously , neither reading comprehension ,nor fact enter into your daily routine. Oily dust! That what you see when a seep attracts dirt over a period of time. That would be rather than a true leak that washes the dust off when it drips to the ground. Of course that’s beyond your comprehension, however you really should be able to tell where the level glass is on your diffcover. It’s below center, not close to the top. Ever looked at a working trucks diff cover? Probably not. If you had you know why I mentioned a glass window.

there is a difference between seepage and a leak. a leak will leave a trail or droplets on the ground, whereas seepage leaves a stain and possibly collects some dust..

anybody on the forum familiar with old 2 stroke Detroits will know the difference between a leak and seepage

FWIW Cummins doesn't consider oil consumption to be excessive until it is below 400 miles per quart for a ISB series engine

Mine' a seepage or weep from the rear axle. No stains on the brick driveway except where I accidentally dripped from an oil change.

But I have to admit, on a previous vehicle, I lived at an apt complex/condo and did not have a designated parking place, so I really did not know if stains on the asphalt were from mine or another vehicle.
