Hey guys i think i'm going to have to replace the front rotors/brakes because there was a squeak noise coming from the front brakes but they looked alright... Now the squeak has turned into a slight grinding, but i cant see any grooves in the rotor? Anyone have any ideas ? And also I was wondering how hard and long this job will take? IS there any tricks or tips to make the job go easier. . You can see the details of my truck in my sig below... . Thanks

Are you sure that your inner pad lining is not worn out? That happened to me, but every time I pulled the wheel, I only looked at the outer pad (Too lazy to lean over and look at the inner pad).

If the lining is worn out and you hear grinding, then the rotor and pad is shot.

I don't know if its the same on 2000, but on my 94 they'er captured rotors so you'll need a wheel puller to change the rotor, or go to a shop that has the machine that turns the rotors on the truck if they need it, but before all of that take the caliper and pads off and see if maybe something got up in there, maybe you don'nt need any of the above.

Well guys I pulled the wheel off last night and while the outside pads were good the inside of the pad looked like it may have cracked and it wore the pad down to where it was doing some grinding... . Enough of grinding that its not possible to get cut... So instead of me #@$%! trying to get the rotor off the truck it is at my buddies shop where he has a press to make the job go a lot easier so by tonight i should be up and running again... Since the truck has over 100k on it i figured i should just replace both rotors... And I must say rotors ain't cheap for these beasts...

You dont need to have a press to get the rotor off of the 2k trucks... I know I have one that I have done the rotors 2 times. And yes the inner pads go fast and the outer look great!

I can do a complete rotor and pad job on both sides of her truck in about 1. 5 hours from start to finish. That caliper holder is held on by 2 17 mm 12 point bolts. Once that is off there are those little rotor retainers on the studs which according to Dodge service. . they dont replace them when they do this job. Its not a bad job...

The only thing that I can come up with causing this problem is that the mounting bolts for the caliper gum up and wont let it float. So when I put it all back together I clean and lube both bolts and the surface where the pads sit on the caliper.

Anyway that is how its done...

That changing the rotors on mine was a major P. I. T. A. Oo. The engineer that designed that setup should be forced to do them for a living :D .

Like Rick said, they changed the setup on the new ones so they are a lot more user friendly.

The one that I did the brakes on was a 2000 4X4. I can change the rotors and pads faster on her truck than I can on my 97 2wd. But I guess I have had more practice on her truck :{ :{ :{

The older 4x4 like 94-98 anyway have pressed in studs they are pressed through the bearing hub and the rotor and they are a min 1/2hr (each rotor)with a press to remove them, after you get the whole assembly to a press, some people I guess force them out while on the truck but I have never had any luck at that, as mentioned above a real PITA
