Here is a new one for me.

98 12V my fuel gauge moves around. As an example, when I went to work last night it was showing 3/4 of a tank. when I got off this am it had dropped to 5/8 of a tank, and by the time I got home it was down to 1/2.

Now it might stay the same tonight, maybe go back up some? The fuel isn't going anywhere, I only live 3 miles from work, but it is driving me crazy, probably a sending unit in the tank?

Probably. But rather than just throwing parts at it there is a procedure in the factory service manual to determine what has failed.

There's a long thread around here about how the plastic float disintegrates over time and how to replace it with a brass one. You still have to drop the tank (or remove the bed).

This is a long-standing problem. And this brings me around to asking: Has anybody found a replacement sender assembly that's less than $400?

I am getting a weird situation with my, I think, fuel sender unit in the tank.
Topped off the tank, drove around for awhile and then ding, ding, ding, little low fuel indicator on the dash comes on, AND fuel gage goes to empty, for about 10 seconds, then goes back to full, and low fuel indicator light goes out.
Just wen to dealership and purchased a new sending unit. $350 to the nice parts man ! They want the old one back as there "re-manufactured".

thank you for the replies. Good to see yet another long standing problem with the Dodge.

After all the things I have fixed, it makes me giddy to see just how many more "long standing problems" I will get the pleasure of fixing.

Did you get the whole canister or just the sender? The last time I bought a sender it was about $37. There are a couple of threads on how to fix senders as well.

Just buy the sender, dealer sells the part, s/b < $50. Also, you can run a dashboard test to verify the fuel gauge function independent of the sender. Just hold in the odometer reset while turning the key to pre-start position, hold for a few secs more, then watch the results.

so, I pushed the odometer reset button in and held it, then turned the key to on, or pre-start.

The fuel gauge never moved, but I did eventually get "check" in text in the odometer box. What does that mean?

Once you see CHEC, release the odometer rest button. If you see a failure message in the odometer display, report back with the message code. If there is no failure message, the dash should proceed to a Self-Diagnostic test which walks through various test modes.
