Just wondering, those that have removed there fuel heater did your milage suffer any? I removed mine two weeks ago, seems to run a little better, a little more smoke, and maybe a little more fuel consumption. Course this last week was not a good test bed for milage. From SLC to the Strawberry lake region in Ut.

I'd like to hear about yours.

Thanks for your replies.

I think anyone living in a cold climate would be better off to leave it in. If for nothing else to reduce stress on the injection pump but it would help in borderline fuel-gelling situations too.

I am in Wa state and mine has been out for years, don't even notice its gone. If I got a new truck it would be the first thing to go.

We hauled the strainer/heater assembly out of my '97 in January while changing the lines and adding a drawstraw, added a Fleetguard strainer in the suction line to take care of any chunks.

No difference in the cold weather operation at all.

Removed it all from Seth's '97 this spring the same way, no ill effects from that either.

I based the removal on the fact that Freightliner installed a ton of 12-valves into the FL series of trucks, they came from the factory with the Fleetguard strainer, one fuel filter and no heater. Worked just fine that way.

That whole strainer/heater mess is just a suction leak looking for a place to happen on a 12 valve engine IMHO.

If you do elect to remove it all you do need to order a spacer from Cummins to properly mount the transfer pump after you remove the strainer plate mounting bracket.

I have the part number if anyone ever needs it in the future.

Mike. :)
