I've pulled a flatbed trailer 36' single tandum wheels loadrange e tires 85# nitrogen filled. Single rear wheel.

Pulled w/06 mega cab 5. 9six speed 4x4 empty 14 mpg ,loaded 9mpg, having to down shift numerouse times on grades. Chipped that same unit no more down shifts picked up about 2 miles gal.

Pulled the same load w/07. 5 C/C auto

4x4 everything else same. fuel mileage was about the same however no down shifts. My biggest complaint however was in passing to get out of the way loaded the truck told me 76mph was the fastest it was GOING TO TRAVEL. Additionally I din't mention my fuel prices have doubled from April 07 June 08. Just chipped it will see what the long term results will be, itr has removed the speed limiter, have m,ade one short trip so I am impressed.

My 5. 9 seemed easier to upgrade but I put alot of money in upgrade and did not see the end results. FUEL COSTS are killing me. I will say this my buddies one w/ 08 Ford, and one w/ 07 with his Chev. can't match my fuel mileage, towing capacity,or reliability from either of my units. Chevy has trans slip at 12k miles Ford empty 12 mpg.

Loads I have to carry now to try to make up for fuel costs. 19k of round and sq bales hay from lexington ky to wartrace. SAD NOTE I had TO GET

RID OFMega Cab. hand calcuated

Had a 99. 5... Lousy MPG. had it chipped and banks exhaust and jumped to 20. 8 empty at 75 MPH. Overhead showed 21. 2... . Was a 3500 5. 9... ... . 2004. 5 stock got 16. 8 everyday and 11. 2 pulling a 39 ft. fifth wheel that weighs 16500# empty with tandem dual axles. Wrecked the 04. 5 and now have a 2008 3500 and only have 600 miles on it. Hope to goodness it will pull the fifth wheel at a pretty good average without having to modify or chip it. I would consider 11 MPG great with that heavy a load. Am very anxious to pull my fiver with the new truck. Have waited the 500 miles but have not had time to hook up and pull the big baby. Oh well, maybe later this summer. The 08 really drives nice empty but have not checked the milage yet.

My 2WD '95 Powerstroke, Auto trans. , gets 11 - 11. 5 MPG pulling my 9,500 lb fiver, and about 18-19 commuting back and forth to work. It has 202,000 miles, and a 4. 10 rear axle. So, I am expecting (perhaps unrealistically??) the same or better out of a brand new Cummins with a manual transmission and a 3. 73 rear axle.

Just for fun... ... ... ...

08 3500 4X4 SRW Long bed; right after a fill up, empty, going downhill with no throttle input.

Before mine went into the shop for it's extended stay, I was getting 14. 9 on the gauge, but only 13. 7 calculated. Unloaded and all under 65 mph. My 1997 2500 got 5-6 mpg better, but I'm hoping for equal to or better than the 8-11 that I used to get while towing my 5er.

I Had a 04. 5 3500 CTD 4x4 auto and have a 32' fithwheel and pull a 23' boat behind it, how much it weights I havn't a clue but my 04. 5 with bully dog got 18mpg ( by doing the math)pulling all that, and 22mpg empty, but I got rid of it for a sweet mega cab and well no more 18mpg. Now it's 11mpg how can I get any better. Nice truck bad mpg.

I just finished a trip from the S. F. Bay area north up I-5 to the Oregon Coast. My gcwr is 22,820. [5-whl] Average fuel economy, all towing, was 8. 5mpg [hand calc. ]. There was a pretty strong headwind blowing and we had a long pull through the mountains of northern Cal and Oregon.

I've seen 24 in a 91 intercooled 1stGen with a 5speed.

I hauled hay for a while in 2002-03. Going from Colorado Springs to Bazine KS, I'd average 18 with the empty trailer in tow (20ft car hauler type, only beefier than average), and 13-14. 5 loaded with hay to a 22-24K GCVW. Only got 19 empty, though. Granted, hills and wind werent real big factors in that time frame, but it's still better than any 24v engine I have heard of.

Thanks for the explanation HBarlow, I will reset my computer today & see what happens.

Yukon Chris

Chris,

My feeble memory is telling me I know you. Aren't you the young man I met and talked with at the local Wal-Mart in Whitehorse Yukon Territory in the late spring of 2003 when I was on my Alaska journey?

Just got back from a short NH to CT trip with the toyhauler loaded to give a GCW of just a bit over 20K. Got a respectable 10. 13 mpg over 185 miles. I think I would have gotten better, maybe closer to 11, but lots of slow traffic requiring much starting and stopping on the highway. Still, I'm happy.

Just took a boat from Merced Ca. to Canidian border up 97 and going up hill I was getting 14 and comming home empty I got 17. 5 so it's slowly getting better truck has 24,000 so far I can't complain . But all I can say is you guys that live up that way off of hwy 97 area sure do have some nice trucks I think I saw 6 dodges to a ford or chevy and most of the dodges were loaded down haulin stuff .

mpg on '08 6.7L

Towing I mostly get somewhere in the 12s. Rarely in the 11s and rarely in the 13s. Empty I'm on cloud nine. We're currently in Colorado gallivanting around Our first chance here to drive without towing, I filled up in Fairplay, drove through Buena Vista to Leadville, back through Buena Vista tom Salida, where I again filled up. A total of 138 miles. Hand calculated that driving figured out to 22. 8 mpg That's with my 2008 6. 7 liter. Speed varied between 45 and 60 . Most of the time I was around 55 mph. I now have over 15,500 miles on the truck. My previous best was 18 point sometning. I was gonna be flying high if I could get 20. Can you guess how I feel about 22. 8?

So Texsmoke you are pulling at the very lees 15. 000 lb of cows what does your trailer weigh? what does your truck weigh are you in hill country? How fast do you drive? Hot or cold air temp. how much air in tires?

Just got back from 2000 mile trip to international falls, mn. 4 guys, and fishing gear. 5500 miles at start. I was impressed to get 17. 3 HAND FIGURED. Console said 19. 5 - 20. 9. not quitre 12 valve grade, but. Hopefully I can afford to break it in. These figures, I think, beat the HEMI. Its gonna get better...

Well Blackbear im pulling a 26' open top W&W gooseneck trailer way less than 15,000 lbs of cattle with 55 lbs of air in the tires at maybe 65 top speed dont like to toss em around too much. But it gets better with my 40' flatbed and about 3000 lbs of a bulky wind dragging load the other day on the way to dallas i averaged 4. 5 hand calculated didnt weigh near as much as these 5th wheel guys and getting worse milege. Again called dodge and again nothings wrong just a poor truck. I have also told them recently that i hardly seem to have half the power the truck did new, but oh well, i love my dodges but after the last 2 i am not to sure if i will ever support them again. Havent been treated very fair on the last 2 with warranty issues and such. Seems a 23 year old with a nice truck gets no respect. They must think my mommy and daddy pay for em and they will take care of it, which is not the case.
