Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Altenator?

I ordered the FASS fuel pump and a westech fuel pressure gauge from Geno's garage to solve the lift pump/injection pump failure problem for good.

I decided to put the gauge in first and see what the fuel pressure was before I put the new pump in.

At start up the gauge reads about 6 lbs. As soon as I put it in drive and touch the pedal it drops fast. If I go up hill or try to accelerate quickly it goes to zero fast, sometimes dips a little below zero. This means the injection pump is creating suction at the gauge sending unit.

This really clearly shows the problem, and the need for a gauge and a stronger pump.

Incidentally, the gauge and pump set up is very well made, and easy to install. I highly recommend this system.

Did the FASS get installed yet? What psi are you running if so? Hope you got the 0 - 30 psi gage, my buddy has a FASS and a 0 - 16 psi gage - it's pegged all the time.

The pump is going in tomorrow. The gauge is the 0-30 psi. I will post the new psi after I get the pump in. Looks to be a straight forward install. I am quite impressed with the quality so far.

My Raptor just came in today... wow... that thing is massive, at least compared with the stock carter. For some reason, I got it into my head to order it with 1/2" lines, which look to me much huger than I could ever possibly need. What was I thinking... ?

Still, can't hurt I guess. That and all my other goodies will just have to wait until I get back from China in a month.

Hopefully I can find some way to distract myself in the meantime.

You were thinking more power my friend, and just when you think you don't need those half inch lines, they might end up saving you some pain. Oo.

I installed the FASS today... what a nice system! The guage now reads aobut 16lbs, it creeps up to 18lbs when going down a hill. On WOT from a dead stop or on a steep hill the guage goes down to between 8 and 10 lbs. The pump is a little loud, but I don't mind. It is soooo much better than the way it came from the factory. PROBLEM SOLVED. :)

I was in the same boat as you, but I went the AirDog FP100 route. Noticeable improvement right off the bat. The one thing I will say is that the only time I ever heard my pump was when it primed the system, before starting; I never heard it, while the truck was running.

Fuel pump

I too replaced mine this spring. Like Fred, I went with the Airdog. 5 minutes after it was in, I wondered why I hadn't done it 3 or 4 LP's ago!!! My airdog is completely silent also. If it weren't for the gauge, I wouldn't know it was running. The two are supposed to be nearly identical. I wonder why the fass is so loud? Either way, no more lift pump issues!

If I turn the key on, BUT DO NOT START THE ENGINE, the gauge swings up to 16 psi when the pump cycles, then swings back to 0. Before I turn the key on it is at 0. Is this normal, or is something wrong? I am concered that the system does not hold the pressure. I have looked for leaks and not found any, the VP44 must be sending the fuel back to the tank. Any ideas?

That is normal, the pump runs for a second or two on "key on" and it you bump the starter it runs 28 seconds. Pressure does drop off. All is normal. SNOKING

Yea Ijust put my air dog last month, it was a pain running the bigger lines but I think it was worth it, quiet and plenty of fuel, I had to do that before I put the adrenaline on. Oh and by the way just go that installed Monday, not as much of a pain but well worth it. WOW! What power, I have never owned a truck this fast. thanks to airdog and quadzilla.

I'm pretty sure the 1/2 inch lines are severe overkill for me but since it can't do any harm, I'm not gonna sweat it... price was the same. Routing will take some extra ingenuity but I'm sure I'll survive the process... Getting rid of the carter is the big thing.

i maybe stupid, but i just put a holley black mounted on the frame last weekend. i wanted to go 1/2'' but i though it would leak since i just cut the stock fuel line. so i opted for 3/8. my psi is 27at idle. so how you adapt 1/2'' line to the stock tiny fuel line.

too much pressure

i have an airdog 150 and it runs about 18 most of the time going to 14 wot up a hill, that's running veggie oil. the supplier said that psi over 20 puts to much side pressure on the vp44 shaft and leads to failure so i'd turn down the pressure if i was you. that's another thing about the airdog you can adjust it in a minute, quiet too.

KCraft,

There is a metal fitting made that adapts from JIC to the stock fuel fitting on the top of the tank. The AirDog comes with the fitting in the kit, might call and ask if they sell just the fitting.

Godspeed,
Trent
