i had a problem about 3,000 mi asgo after starting the 05 would start to stall and recover ,then run ok on the highway until I came to the exit ramp almost to a stop and it would stumble. Tried injector cleaner and lube started to get better but now worst. GOT IT IN A DIEsel shop and they think it maybe the fuel management valve. any Ideas

Is it throwing any codes?

Fuel pressure relief valve, fuel control actuator, or lift pump are all possibilities. I would verify lift pump pressure first.

Not throwing codes fuel filter was changed got a call from garage stating it is the fuel pressure regulator does this sound possible to the tune of $580.00

There is no such device named as "fuel pressure regulator" on an 05 CR. I do not know what component this garage is referring to, maybe the lift pump? It supplies volume as it's primary duty, fixed pressure depending on throttle position. Maybe they are describing the fuel control actuator? That controls the amount of fuel delivered to the CP3 injection pump.

Seems to me, that if a shop/garage cannot correctly identify the fuel delivery components by their correct name, I would have little to no confidence in their ability to repair the vehicle. $580 would be more than I would spend to replace either item, both can be purchased for around $150 or less each.

I would ask for further explanation, and proof...and assurance before they would proceed.

I agree with JJPage...if you have ANY alternatives, pay the for their diagnosis time and take the truck to a shop that KNOWS the Cumins CR fuel system...they have called parts wrong TWICE (fuel management valve ((probably the fuel control actuatator)) and fuel pressure regulator ((raill pop valve, or who knows??)). I would be VERY skeptical of a shop working on a truck that they don't know the names of the parts to..unless you are SURE that they know what they are doing, you can probably save money by taking you truck to a shop that DOES...a few phone calls, or maybe even an inquiry here on TDR, should get you the name of a trustworthy shop hopefully close to your location.

Maybe post a new thread in the "911" forum and title it somehting like "Good diesel shops near Blythe, Canada?"

Does the truck stop, just as you cross the Colorado river into AZ, have a Cummins tech? It used to be a Flying J truck stop, I haven't been through there in a while and Flying J was bought out by Pilot, so it might be under a different name.

Are they still Flying J or did they rename it to Pilot, just curious? Blythe is the last big city (for that area) within a wide area, is there a dedicated Cummins shop in Blythe?

Well I got the truck back yesterday, running great. The tec checked lift pump OK installed fuel metering valve OK Found the fuel pressure regulator failing . Installed new one from napa $359.16 The actuall injection pressure dropped to 2000 psi disired is 7000. So there is such a part fuel pressure regulator. The tec knows what he is talking about I do recomend Blyth Freeway towing Inc.

"Fuel pressure regulator" may be the description NAPA is using to identify the component, which is still unclear to me what they replaced? Was it the "rail pressure relief valve (prv)" located in the rail?

At least you have your truck back skorski, and you seem to be satisfied with the repair, good to hear. Also, Thank you for following through and letting us know you got your truck running properly again, it's always nice to hear "the end of the story", so to speak.

The rail pressure relief valve does not regulate fuel rail pressure, it is a safety that prevents rail pressure from exceeding a certain limit, once activated they tend to not re-seal, and leak, therefore causing low rail pressure at all rpms...

I am not a tec but if you call napa or blythe towing mabe they could set you stright. 1 760 922 5280

Most aftermarket shops will subscribe to a tech info site. They may not use the same names as the oem's but use more generic terms the same way aftermarket scanners have some different definitions for Dtc's

Where is this "prv" located? This may be my issue as it comes and goes meaning I push tow and was pulling 5ver, low rail pressure, got out smarty and cleared all good now for the moment but I'm sure it will come back. So these have a tendency not to reseat? can they become weak ? Are they spring loaded? Please explain.
