Don't be too sure. My last fillup took 24 gallons with 424 on the trip odometer. That's right at 595 miles to flameout (mixed highway and city). Bet I could beat 600 on highway, unloaded only.

No question though, your gauge (or more likely your sender) is AFU.

Both my gauges that failed read correctly down to 1/2 tank, than dropped right to empty.

Well, in the spring of 99, my gauge started to fall to empty or be all over the place when it weas near a quarter full. Slowly, the place where it went nuts got higher. For most of the summer, this rose to two thirds of a tank. Then when fall came around, it calmed down to just sitting on E when it passed the bad spot. Now, when I fill up, it sitts on a quarter and goes down to E in 20 miles. I assume it will get even worse. The odd thing is the fuel light didn't relate to the posistion of the needle. I had it comeon when it said three quarters of a tank and not come on when it was pegged out on E. The gauge didn't relate to the amnount of fuel in the tank, it might have 75 miles on a full tank, and the light come on. I'll get it fixed soon.

PostCars;

See my tag line for my vehicle stats . . but I easily get 600 miles on a tank . . 31gals to be exact.

Right off the lot I got 16. 5 - 17 city and 18 - 19. 5 hwy. 2125rpm's @ 70mph . . unloaded.

I have 4500 miles now . . no change . . can't wait until it breaks in #ad

As far as a problem with the sending unit . . I think there was a good article in issue 26 related to the sending unit.

Just wanted to comment that 600 miles on a tank was obtainable and repeatable . . for my setup at least.

Good luck
Michael

FYI: I don't know if anyone else agrees with me, but... .

After owning my truck a few months, and having the fuel guage latch full on several occasions, I tried an experiment that works for me... .

I NEVER NEVER NEVER top off the tank after the pump first clicks off. I have never had the fuel gauge problem since. (As a test I did top it off many months later and yep it latched up again)

My experience is different than David's. The sending unit failed three years ago and I replaced it. The replacement has been working fine ever since. I always fill up to the top of the neck. I dunno if there is anything consistant about these crazy things. I probably accidently got a good one. The first one failed at about 40K miles or so. 140K+ on it now.

My sender unit started to go bad around 12,000mi. I finely got it repalced last month under warranty at 24,000mi. This is all too common a problem for Ram owners and I have read may post about bad sender units over the past few years

Ya Know What? The problem is widespread. Everybody has the fuel gauge problem. Can you spell class action lawsuit? Just kidding, the obvious is absurd. It is one thing to ignore an expensive problem like the weak link auto transmission and another to ignore the fuel gage problem. Mine has been "fixed" and it is still a problem. Kind of like buying a bucket with a hole in it; just put more water in it. Why are the DC Dummies not solving the problem?

The hammer trick works.

I filled up a at pump that did not shut off until fuel started spitting out of the fill cap. This is probably the fullest the tank has been. Well, with 35800 miles on the truck... the fuel guage decided to stick on full.

Conducted a search on the website, and found the hammer trick. I put a block of wood against the tank and hit it three times near the sending unit. Started it up, and the guage acted properly. Kind of feel like I'm working on my old '79 jeep instead of a $30K truck a year old.

Mine's been doing it since the truck was almost new. A swift couple of kicks on the tank at the next fillup has always worked.

I had to have my sending unit replaced under warranty at about 20K miles. It was reading full all the time and just started overnight... . Larv

WHell here goes another one! Mine ran RUFF and blew cloud of Blue smoke then quit Monday 6-19 going back to Albq. guage read 1/4+, so wasn't fuel prob (yeah, right!). had it towed (toed??) to the dealer. Next day called to ck on it and the sender was bad; tank was MT. Replaced guage - added fuel - runs OK. 25363 miles on the y2k. Therefore the new units are still experiencing the "bad fuel sender" problem. Just a "heads-up" for all. Watch your mileage on a per tank basis (tried to get too many miles out of it - was going by the DTE and the fuel guage, not the odometer). OH, well - #ad

Learned that lesson REAL QUICK (thought mine was "immune" from this problem-HAHAHA!).

SOTSU!!

p. s. side note - mech found out it "over boosted" and asked me about it, told him about the elbow and he liked it!, BUT, beware - the DRB shows the overboost and amount (mine showed 27#'s - mech just "erased it" 4 me). Also, questioned him about reprogramming to the HO specs - said Cummins should be able to do it but the dealer software wont let him do it. (my mech likes power from the Cummins and DC has not told him to report vin#'s - so this must be a "Dealer" thing for warranty)
