The front fuel tank strap on my 97 3500 broke. The fix looks straight forward but when I got under the truck there is hardly any room to get a socket in there. Any clues will be helpful.

Hello

Living in maine at the time; by fuel strap retainer broke "from rust" twice. Get a long extension-install a jack under the fuel tank and usea piece of ply-wood for support, between the jack and tank.

You should not have any problems.

Good luck,

JL

If you remove the tank be sure and siphon all the fuel you can out of the tank. The tank is not baffled and if/when the fuel starts to slosh it can be damn near impossible to keep under control.

If you just replace the strap you should not have to disturb any of the probably corroded hose connection to the sending unit.

WHEN MINE BROKE i WAITED TILL i WAS A QUARTER TANK OF DIESEL AND USED A FLOOR JACK AND 3 PIECES OF 3/4 PLYWOOD WORKED GREAT, TOOK AWHILE TO GET A NEW STRAP SO i ARC WELDED IT WITH A TOOL STEEL ROD, I:) KEEP IT FOR A SPARE!

Hello

You DO NOT HAVE TO REMOVE THE TANK. Place a piece of plywood under the tank and jack it up where it would normally be. Place one end of the strap in the slip-notch and adjust. The other end slips on bolt head - screw on nut and tighten up.

It;s that simple.

I had coss-threaded threads on the forward tank strap stud. To replace the forward stud is way harder then the rear stud. The rear stud has wiggle room between the bed and frame but the forward stud is under the cab. That is more difficult to work on. As I remember, I would of had to raise the bed to work on the forward stud but in the rear the bed doesn't need raised cause there is more room there.

I ended up re-tapping the threads on the forward stud and fixed it. Otherwise I would have to raise the cab I believe.

I had a thread on TDR that had pics of my problem. I'll try to find it for you if you are still working on it.
