Limp Mode

If your sensors relate readings that are well out of acceptable parameters to the ECM, the ECM may choose to protect the transmission and the rest of the engine by detuning the engine while still allowing you to drive it to obtain help. This may be why you are only able to make 25 mph. I have also seen where the transmission will start in second instead of first when in "Limp Mode". The fact that your check engine light is on is more evidence pointing at the possiblity of your being in "Limp Mode".

Try this, disconnect BOTH batteries for several hours and then reconnect them. Three hours should be more then enough time to leave the batteries disconnected. This should clear the codes and get you out of "Limp Mode". Then, with the MAP wiring back to stock, go for a ride to see how the engine performs.

Let us know how this works.

has anyone taken banks or the dealer to court. for a restictedwarranty?if so could u let me no please. iam going all the way with this

thanks guys

I always read how a banks system will not void your warranty. IMO the truth is it can and does. If Banks still advertises this,Id call them first, see if they will honor it,or pay for the pump, and all future claims that are within the 3/36 or ext coverage. If they answer no,time to go to court. Banks also claims there exhaust brake adds 15-30 hp,on the Ram CTD which is an outright lie, that defies the laws of phsics so I dont believe anything they say anyhow.

Guys... stop the suit talk and lets concentrate on getting this guys rig running...

ctingler. . follow HVAC's advise. . figure out what IS wrong. . he is giving you great advise !!

chances are it isn't the pump at all and all the suit talk is just frustration willing to jump into a arena you won't enjoy. . remember their pockets are much deeper than yours

ctinger... . Willy is right!! Let's try to get your truck running first and determine what's wrong. It may have nothing to do with Banks stuff. HVAC and others here will try to help you... . Keep us informed.

Spoke to Chuck

Chuck says the truck runs smooth and even, but will only make 25mph. The dealer scanned it and found a MAP sensor code. They replaced the MAP and had no improvement. Still had a check engine light with a MAP sensor code. I have to believe a wiring problem exists. Checking continuity on those wires might be in order.

Also, he disconnected the batteries back when the problem origionated some three weeks ago! Didn't help though. A problem still exists one would think.

I suggested getting the truck out of the NAPA Dodge dealers garage and find a place competent enough to get the thing repaired. Then worry about who's responsible for what. It's hard to see where the Banks kit caused his MAP sensor to fail. But then they told him his tailshaft seal leak on the transmission was a result of removing the driveshaft to install the exhaust system!!! Well you and I both know the drive shaft doesn't need to be removed to install an exhaust system. But you can see their colors, every problem from here to eternity is a result of the modifications in their eyes. Pass the buck, pass the buck, pass the buck.

I had some funky codes on mine when my pump failed. In all it took 4 hours to get it to stop throwing codes. 4 hours to r&r my pump. So at 100 dollars an hour at cummins nw and 1400 for a pump I was at 2200 dollars. 10000 is a complete sham. If the map is out would it smoke and run rough?

MAP Sensor

At this time he says it runs smooth and even. Just won't go faster then 25 mph. If the MAP doesn't send anything to the ECM then I could see how the fueling rate would be paralyzed. The ECM relys on feedback from the MAP as it adds fuel. No feedback, no more fuel. Chuck says the throttle is spongy, no response. Guess I'll have to disconnect the MAP on my dually.

Fuel Injection Pump

HVAC, I got a hold of Specialty Towing and they're supposed to be able to pickup my truck from Dodge in the late morning and tow it to Cummins West. The cost will be $250 or less. I called Cummins and got their answering service and told them that my truck will be coming over there in the afternoon, but I'm going to call them in the morning to double check and make sure they got the message. Another day of work gone. Heading to the Dodge dealer in the morning to make sure they have everything back on the truck.

Thanks for everyone's help and I will keep you all informed of what's happening with the truck.

Fuel Injection Pump

Truck is finally out of Napa Chrysler and it's over at Cummins West.

Here are the results that they gave me at Napa Chrysler:mad:

Customer reports that engine is running rough, has no power. There was blue smoke from tail pipe and check engine light is on. Inspect, scan test, found code for failing map sensor. Still runs poor after map sensor replacement. Inspect found engine controls had been tampered with. Waste gate rod has evidence of attempted adjustment. (Plier marks on rod). Has had wiring attached to computer system wiring. Found scotch lock attached at one wire to computer. Also where one wire was attached at harness at throttle position sensor. Test system pressure. Lift pump pressure good (15 psi). Test system. Checks good. Found pump not operating properly at higher engine RPM. Test exhaust temp. found approx. 200 degrees higher at the rear engine cylinders. Engine getting un-even fuel mixture at cylinders due to pump tampering. Void sticker on pump not torn, but appears to have had been peeled off to avoid tearing, as it is loose on the connector to the pump. Chrysler tech rep also found wiring to have been hidden in cowl seal. Chrysler tech rep states the turbo-charger and fuel injection pump need to be replaced. Turbo needs to be replaced as the waste-gate diaphragm has been modified and cannot be ordered without the turbo charger. No repairs made. Engine warranty has been restricted by Daimler/Chrysler due to tampering in an attempt to gain more power. The remaining of the vehicle warranty remains in tact at this time. Fuel filter was replaced in attempt to repair at beginning of repair process.

Banks has requested all of my receipts. So we'll see what happens.

Thanks!

Keep us updated Chuck, we are hoping for a happy ending to this trauma. I guess the truck is at Cummins West now? I might stop in there tomorrow to see if they have looked at it.

They didn't mention in that report that they still are getting a code for a MAP problem. They just go on and on about all the other stuff.

Cummins Cowboy,

You can imagine they are grasping at straws with all the documentation they have contrived to justify their position. I haven't heard of a VP44 causing higher cylinder temps at one point or other. They either fail or they work, not a lot of in between.

I can see where they could measure the output temp on each ex. tube with a laser readout thermometer.

I know Cummins checks egt on each cyl in order to home in on a problem.

HVAC-

You can imagine they are grasping at straws with all the documentation they have contrived to justify their position.

Right On.

They've done a lot of poking around and making observations (need new turbo because the wastegate diaphragm has been modified? THIS is why the truck won't do better than 25 mph and smokes?) but haven't diagnosed squat yet!

Sounds to me like they are parts changing, and the injection pump is their 'next best guess' as to what the problem could be. All this at the owner's expense. I believe they quoted him such an outrageous price hoping that he'd go away!! And he did!!

Chuck- Hang in there and let us know how it's going. We feel your pain.

thanks guys they lied and lied for three weaks hell they even took my k&n filter out and through it away to i havent heard anything from cummins yet. iguess there busey to i just cant wait tell i get it back:(

Truck @ Cummins West

Chuck, they didn't have time to get to your truck today :( They usually have a pretty full plate over there. Robert did say it may be the pump. I was hoping for a different diagnosis:{ I'm still optimistic, I think:confused:

Why the heck does the dealer care if there are mods anyway sometimes they act like they are haveing to do the work for free. In this case all they have done is **** off a customer who I am sure will never ever buy a vehicle from their dealership again. The only thing i can think of for them wigging out over the mods is they are too incompitent to figure out what the real problem is and would never say so, so just blame it on the mods if all else fails

Look, I understand where you're coming from about the mods issue on your truck (s), but the fact remains that that engine is warrentied to work in a specific range and last for a specific amount of mile/hours/years. Now if you choose on your own to work the engine outside of that range, you have redesigned the engine. Why should the dealer/Cummins pay for the repaires to your engine, when it is no longer there design? You have made the engine yours when you modify it, so you become responsible for it. -Lane-

guys does anyone know how the otto mind fools the map sensor? is it hard wired or does it have a plug? if it is hardwired maybe a wire was damaged while it was installed?

there is also some specs for the map sensor for testing. i can't remember what they are but i know you can check for communication between the ecm and the map sensor with a multi-meter. if someone has a service manuel they can help you out.
