I recently had my Dual Mass Flywheel/clutch replaced with a South Bend Flywheel/clutch. After reading the posts on hard shifting I now understand why it's hard to shift into 2nd without going into 1st. The material that was provided with the clutch has a tech bulletin from Lazar Smith suggesting replacing the ATF in a G-56 with GL-6 gear oil. I'm sure most of you are aware GL-6 is an old designation.

My question is have any of you done this and how did it work out? Is GL-5 OK to use and if so what weight?

Thanks.

Do NOT listen to what Lazarsmith has to say on what fluid to use wth the g56 transmission and ESPECIALLY do not use their Gorilla Juice lube...many people have had negative results and excessive metal wear when using the GJ. That being said, the ATF that Chrysler insists on using is unfortunately not necessarily the perfect lube either. While there are just about as many lube recommendations for the g56 as there are owners, th best thing to do is to decide for yourself by reading this EXCELLENT article--

There has been much talk as to the proper lube to use in the G56 ever since it's introduction back in 05. It's true that Chrysler +4 is what Ram calls for and this is the fluid the units come with from the factory. That said the fluid that I used and seemed to have the best of all worlds (fair shifting, better gear/ syncro protection) was Pensoil Syncro mesh. When the transmission is cold it will shift a bit slower so don't force it. But after well over 220,000 miles on the 05 I use to own the gear box was still tight with no noises. Do not use the Amsoil auto transmission fluid as it is too thin and didn't allow the syncro's to do their jobs properly, ask me how I know. I had given it a try and after only one day dumped it and went back to the Pensoil stuff. If not abused
or over tourqued with tuners the G56 is a good unit. hope this helps.

The only thing positive from Lazorsmith is their G56 Girdle, but at a $1000.00, that's too much. Best protection of your G56 is to keep it cool to prevent the two piece Aluminum case from stretching when hot, no mater how you achieve that. I'm partial to Mobil Delvac Synthetic Transmission Fluid 50.

Guess I'll seek out some Mobil-Delvac 50 and give it a try.

The Dlevac 50 mixed 50-50 with Penzoil Syncromesh is supposed to be a good fill. Several heavy haulers swear by it. Same mix in the t-case is suppsoed to be a better fill thna ATF also.

What fluid replaces it? Mobil doesn't seem to list anything as a direct replacement when you enter SHC DC. I couldn't even find the specs on the new oils. Just sales propaganda.

MOBIL DELVAC SYNTHETIC TRANSMISSION FLUID 50 is touted as a replacement for the SHC in GL1 to GL4 applications. MB updated its specs to broaden the fluid suitability for the G56 so there are several that are supposed to fit in that range.

I'm a Red Line Oil fan, and recently put Red Line MT-90 in my G56 with only 3,000 miles on the clock, and Red Line MTL in the transfer-case. Both are GL-4 gear oils for manual transmissions.

I'm going to try the MT-90 in the G56 for a while, but may go to the lighter MTL in the future. I have over 15 years and 100k+ miles with MTL in an F-350 7.3L that also spec'ed ATF trans oil for the ZF-S5 5-speed transmission and the Borg-Warner transfer-case. I've also run MTL for many miles and years in a VW Golf TDI 5-speed transaxle.

Question: what fluid replaces it?

Translation: I don't know.
