I just ordered the Mobil Delvac 50 from Graingers, they come in one gallon containers and at a fair price.

Thank you John for the excellent testing and write up. Made my decision on changing from ATF-4+ easy.
77. 50 a Gallon, guess it's better than 185. 00 gallon

RVTRKN,

I recently spoke to one of the guys at the Texas headquarters. They said Richard in Tucson knows his stuff.
I had a long talk with him about the G56, and indeed he knows his stuff. He is also a very nice guy and took the time to talk to me in depth about the G56. That is the reason I'm going way out of my way as well as the extra expense for him to go through it. I was only planning on having the SF and SBC DD 3250 installed by a local shop and in my search for the parts I noticed Standard transmission had a shop in Tucson. I just called inquiring about the parts, when Richard answered the phone and the conversation went for awhile, what he was saying was just about what I had read in an earlier TDR article and told him I had read about that in TDR. It turned out he was involved in the article.

Has anyone made the switch to the Molbil Delvac 50 synthetic, How is the shifting in cold weather? I had switched to Penzoil Syncromesh (Sp?) and found the shifting was very stif when cold. Almost un shiftable with the transmission 1 qt. overfilled when it's 20 degrees or colder.

I just checked with O'Reilly, they have Castrol syngear CD50, Roadranger approved for $180 for 5 gal bucket. I am not completely sold on Mobil being the only approved oil available.

Anyone can buy Amsoil at Preferred customer rates, if you like.
send me a PM if you're interested.

I'm about to install a South Bend Clutch, with a smf. While I have not had an issues with the DMF, the pressure plate is very weak, and as such the clutch will slip with heavy throttle or steep grades with a load.
Then I'll have to play with the lube oil to see how it shifts and the level of noise.

Since I started my search for the right oil for the G56, there has been a flurry of posts and threads started here in TDR and in other forums as well. I would be careful of home remedies and gear oil, motor oil and any other claims of oil testimonials. Per Mercedes Benz there are only two approved oils for their commercial transmissions, and the G56 is a MB commercial transmission. I'm providing the links and another MB link where someone on another Forum thinks it is approved, but turned out to be wrong, when I looked up "MB 235-41" it shows it to be a gear oil. The proper Mercedes Benz rating is "MB 235-13", which is their rating for commercial transmission synthetic oil. I know there are a lot of opinions and testimonials about many different brand oils as well as mixing different oils and I'm not criticizing them. Just trying to set the record strait about the approved oil by Mercedes Benz, for the G56, note that ATF is not listed under MB 235-13.

If you want to see all of the ratings.

Proper related MB 235-13

The wrong oil per rating MB 235-41 as referenced above.

RV, thank you for the hard work on your research. I for one, will be using a high quality 50wt. synthetic manual transmission fluid of some sort. Since I don't have a G56 with the aluminum case (maybe why they spec Mobil) I think I have some choices. This new info you have posted has pushed me past the old school rut that I have been in. Just because what I have been using is good and works, don't mean there is not better fluid out there.

Sorry about the above post with the Castrol CD50, I lost track of the G56 specific oil thread;)

Well thanks, but I just found the comparison, I didn't actually research the oil. Flopster843 did all the work, I just linked it for TDR members.

I stopped by the local truck parts house and found that Mack makes a 50 Wt synthetic transmission oil that matches the Mobil Delavan 50 spec. It's $36 a gal. It's now installed seems to be a bit stiff shifting when cold but very smooth when up to temp.

I put it in today. Honestly,I can't feel the difference over Pennsoil Synchromesh aside from a quieter transmission. It won't be cold here for another ten months so I can't speak for the morning shift. (Cold here is 30* on the coast)

I honestly don't expect to feel a difference, but if I do, then great. Just wan't to run the proper oil for longevity of the trans, especially due to it being at the edge of the Torque ability that the CTD's put out.

What do you think of TORCO RTF? I switched to it about a year ago. It is quieter than with ATF. Someone had recommended it on TDR and it is rated GL 6 for whatever that is worth.

The (API) American Petroleum Institute are the ones that determine the classifications of Gear Lubes, as well as Engine oils. The GL-6 Classification is OBSOLETE for more than 12 years, though it is occasionally used as a selling point, and only suggests the product contains a higher level of (EP) Extreme Pressure additives than required for a GL-5 Gear Lube.

Well, i received the Mobil Delvac-50 yesterday, Waiting to change out my dual mass with solid flywheel before putting it in, My dual mass and stock clutch has over 114,500 miles on it and is still doing fine, gonna get all i can out of it before replacing, have all new clutch and hardware sitting in shop waiting for the critical day when i have to replace, Monte

I made the switch to the Mack 50w synthetic gear/ transmission fluid that my parts supplier says is the same as the Mobil Delvac-50. Shifting when cold is very stiff and slow. After 3 or 4 miles it loosens up and all is normal. Gear is super quiet, was quiet to start with (only 17,500 miles on it) but it's even more so with this fluid. I had switched to the Penzoil syncromesh at 10,000 miles, at the time there was a small amount of metal on the drain plug magnet. When I did this change at 17,250 miles there was a lot more metal on the magnet... ... Guess I'll be keeping a close watch... .
