Last week I did a favor for my local dealer, Bolles CDJ in Union, CT by picking up a 2005 CTD 4x4 SLT LWB in North Adams, MA. The truck was equiped with the G56 transmission. The trip was about 110 miles each way. The truck had 88 miles on it when I picked it up. I did not realize the truck had the new six shooter in it until I tried in vain to put it into reverse and discovered that it had been moved to a better place, all the way over on the left and down. This is a very big improvement over the shift pattern on my NV5600, imo.
I drove the truck back from North Adams to Greenfield, MA over Route 2 (the Mohawk Trail) and I had many chances to shift this baby and I will say that I felt this was the best shifting vehicle I have ever driven and that is saying a lot because I have a NV5600 with the short shifter that I am more than satisfied with. The G56 right out of the box shifts very easily and smooooothly and the throw between gears is just right and the pattern felt very natural.
I do not know about the aluminum case or how it handles torque, but this truck was a hoot to drive. I would like to try it pulling my 15K trailer. If the durability proves out well, I would get this transmission in a heartbeat.
