I have a 2014 3500 srw. I noticed over the summer a clanking sound related to speed. On inspection the mechanic said it was the transmission. It is now harder to shift into lower gears occasionally. I’m looking for a source for a hopefully more durable G56 that is reasonable in or near New England. TIA.

How many miles on it and what kind of maintenance has it had?

Clank is more u-joint related. I would do more checking before I assumed it was the transmission. Like drain the fluid and inspect it for quality.

And the difficulty in shifting. I would definitley eliminate clutch before I spent all kinds of money on a transmission.

Especially if you then have to put a clutch in it

Assuming a DFM and stock matching clutch.

Suggest the following for possible determination chicken or egg for noise source.

Engine and trans warmed up. Truck stationary.
Set parking brake.
Clutch hold pedal down, select any gear and keep it in gear, keep clutch pedal on floor.

Now shut engine off and listen real close to noise. Helps if you do this next to a brick wall to bounce sound off of.

If silent engine only noise, G56 might be in play.
If rattling shutdown suspect DMF.

This test by keeping clutch pedal down, trans in gear nothing in trans is rotating. Only trans involvement rotation is input shaft to pilot bearing. A worn out DMF can also mess up shifting.

Of course other possibles exist but knowing under what conditions noise exists or better if you can control or create noise circumstances that's big help.
